Hello, just come across this site as my laptop has a graphics card failure. looking at my motherboard the GPU is soldered into place, is it possible to unsolder and fit a new graphics card, I am pretty good with a soldering iron but i'm not sure if the GPU is motherboard specific or where you can buy replacements from. Any ideas????

Hello Paul and welcome to my forum.

Sorry to hear that your laptop has failed.

Your laptop contains an Nvidia G86-770-A2 and is one of the more prolific of the defective GPU's.

The GPU is also located on a removable card known as an MXM-II card, though you would not be able to replace the card using a soldering iron.

You would need specialist equipment in order to perform this task so in short, the answer to your question is no, you would not be able to replace this.

Who did you purchase the laptop from and how did you pay?

You may be able to pursue a claim against the retailer and that would be a much better option for you.

Please let me know and I will advise further.

Best wishes

Paul

Thankyou for your reply, I bought the laptop off ebay as spares and repairs as it had a broken screen, no chance of a refund lol, I repair laptops and computers as a hobby and have done soldering work on replacing bios chips. I have also dabbled with reballing so I am game to have a go at soldering in a replacement, not like i can do any harm, its not working now :@

I will let you know how I get on

Have a great new year :!

I bought an Acer Aspire 5742 in July 2011 it developed a black screen/ white horizontal bar on 13th feb2013. Tesco initial reaction was a very polite refusal to do anything. I sent an out of year claim form to customer service had an email Friday 22nd saying they had tried to contact me, but were unable to do so. I have now asked that they put all communications in writing. (When I checked there was no message or evidence that anyone from Tesco had called).
From what I read from other posts they believe if they ignore/frustrate customers enough the customer will eventually give up, but oh no.

Hello Acerhell and welcome to my forum.

Sorry to hear that your laptop has failed.

You are quite correct insofar as Tesco do seem to try and frustrate customers who are making a claim for a defective laptop.

They have even sent customers cheques for sub £100 "in full and final settlement" before the customer has even agreed to such a settlement.

Stand your ground with them end don't let them fob you off and you will be successful.

They may tell you that your laptop is out of warranty and that there is nothing that they can do. You should tell them that the warranty status is irrelevant as you have six years from the date of purchase in which to bring an action against a retailer when the goods in question are inherently defective.

They may then tell you to contact Acer. You should tell them that you purchased from Tesco and not from Acer so it is entirely their responsibility to resolve the situation.

See what they say. If they say they will inspect it for a fee you should refuse and say that due to the "reverse burden of proof" then you will provide your own independent engineers report.

There is a step by step guide on this forum that will help you reach a positive resolution and that is here:- post13.html#p13

If you follow my advice in that guide then you will be successful.

I hope the above helps.

If you have any questions or if you need any advice then please let me know.

Good luck and best wishes

Paul
