Hi Paul.

I recently registered and am now in a position to start the process of something.

As I purchased from COMET, and they are now in Administration, I will now start the process against the credit card company with whom I made my purchase.

I bought the Acer in Jan 2008 and was quite happy with it for about 3 years.
Then all of a sudden it started - BSOD, screen freezing, screen with blocks of lines running top to bottom, black screen with grey blocks top to bottom. Most restarts and the system came back up for a while.
Then, in December 2010, just before going away with work for 14 weeks, the screen became terminal. No amount of restarts / cool downs / or even software reloads brought it back.
As I was about to depart, I bought a new one to keep me company whilst I was away.
Of course, upon my return, the laptop had been duly retired to the depths of the bedroom cupboard to gather dust, and my memories of this laptop were becoming very distant.
Recently, I thought, I wonder if I can get that old laptop up and working so my 2 year old could maybe play some games on it, and so the process of internet searching for replacement graphics cards started.
Replacements are not cheap, and of course having now read the stories on this site, are very unreliable, if at all any good as all would probably have the inherent defect.
So I happened upon the "BAKE IT IN THE OVEN" trick, which worked (also had a mates and done the heat gun trick - which also worked), albeit a temporary fix. So my son was quite happy, had a working games laptop that I didn't mind if he butchered it.
I also happened across this site, and what a great site this is.
I read through the many stories, some fortunate others not so, and have now decided that I am going to pursue some recompense.
May I say that had I not seen this site, I would have probably have just kept baking the GPU to sustain life.
As I said earlier, I purchased from COMET, and as they are now in Administration, I am going to attempt a credit card company attack.
Paul if there are any tips you could pass to me for this approach, I would be grateful. I have read most of the posts relating to similar, but would just like confirmation of immediate steps to take.

Thanks and Merry Christmas

Malc McLean

Hello Malc and welcome to my forum.

Sorry to hear that your laptop has failed.

I am glad that you found us as we can now assist you in reaching a positive resolution.

Like you quite rightly stated, as Comet are in administration you can now pursue a claim against the credit card company.

There is a template letter available in this forum that you should download, edit with your details and then send to the credit card company. That letter can be found here:- letter-to-credit-card-company-when-retailer-ceased-trading-t249.html

You should download that, edit it with your details and then send it to the credit card company via recorded delivery.

You should then sit back and wait for a response from them. When they do reply please pop back here and let me know what they say and I will then advise further.

The GPU that is incorporated into your laptop is also incorporated into the following laptops which are all failing in large numbers:-

Quote:
Acer Aspire 5920G
Acer Aspire 7520
Asus G2S-A1
Asus F3SV
Asus A7SV-7S011C
HP DV9689EA
HP DV9574EA
HP DV9275EA
HP DV9667EA
HP DV9560EA
HP DV9695EA
HP DV9658EA
HP DV9590EA
HP DV9576EA

Medion MIM2300
Medion Akoya MIM 2300
Packard Bell Ares GP2W
Packard Bell Easynote MB88-P003
Packard Bell Minos GP2W
Rock 025366
Samsung NP-X65T000/SUK
Sony VGN-FZ21S
Sony VGN-FZ21Z

Zoostorm 8227D
Zoostorm 3384-5628

The above are only a small fraction of the laptops that incorporate the same GPU and all the laptops that are highlighted in red have either had a BIOS update released which switches the fans on continuously in order to try and prevent the GPU from overheating or the respective manufacturers have publicly admitted that they are inherently defective.

The key to success is persistence. Don't let the credit card company try and fob you off. Stand your ground, stick to your guns and be persistent and you will succeed.

I hope the above helps.

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes

Paul
