Hi everybody,
At the end of last year my mum's dell laptop suffered the nvidia defect. She wrote it off and bought a new toshiba laptop however I looked into the problem. First I found that you could slightly prolong the laptops life by heating the GPU with a hairdryer. However when it stopped working again I found your forum. I spoke to someone at dell and told him my problem and that because of goods and services I had 6 years to claim on the defect. He told me that I needed to either drive 1 and a half hours to drop it off or ship it there to get the mobo replaced. I called later that day to request a new system or refund. They just kept telling me that because I was no longer under warranty and that I hadn't experienced this issue before they could only replace the mobo and they refused to acknowledge that the problem was their fault. So I come to ask the forum what I should do next. Sorry for the long post but I wanted to properly establish my problem. Dell seem to be quite adamant that they aren't in the wrong. The person I spoke to said that nobody has ever come back to them with the same fault after getting the mobo replaced.

Hello Nicholas and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear that your laptop has failed.

Dell really are amazing aren't they! Why on earth are they making it so difficult for their customers to claim against an inherently defective laptop that they sold AND admitted was inherently defective.

You can see confirmation of this here:- NVF_NOT.pdf

I am amazed that Dell asked you to drive one and a half hours to drop it off - the onus is on them to either collect your laptop or to effect a repair in your home.

Though would you want a repair? The chances are that the spare parts being used could also be inherently defective and besides, Dell only used refurbished parts when repairing these laptops and not new parts as one would expect.

Please let me know if you purchased and are resident in the UK and the method of payment you used (if you paid by credit card then you have extra protection)

Once I know that I will be able to advise further.

Best wishes

Paul

Hi Paul,
I am a citizen of Australia and we paid by Mastercard. I don't really won't a repair but every time I tell Dell that the repairs still have the defect they refuse to acknowledge it and tell me because i'm out of warranty they can't help me further. Also yeah I know they use refurbished parts they replaced the motherboard on my m14x twice with used parts.
