my laptop recently started to have a few problems such as,,,wireless kept turning off then no sound and finally no screen..was going to take it back to staples but didn,t no were i stood with buying it in 2008.then i heard about the the defect in the gpu,s...the c/n is cnf8142xl4,,can anybody help...thanks..

Hello Gaz and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear that your laptop has failed.

The loss of wireless is one manifestation of the defect as is the blank screen so it is possible that your laptop is indeed inherently defective.

Looking at your serial number I can see that your laptop was manufactured in China in week 14 of 2008 which was around when all the defective GPU's were being used.

Please could you let me know the P/N from the white barcode label on the underside of the laptop and I will see if I can find any further information.

I will then be able to advise further.

Thank you for that.

Your laptop contains an Nvidia 7000 GPU (GPU revision MCP87MV-A2) and whilst not as prolific as the 8400 and 8600 GPU's it is still failing in large numbers.

You should now contact Staples and should tell them that your laptop has failed due to what you believe to be an inherent defect in the Nvidia GPU.

They may tell you that your laptop is out of warranty and that there is nothing that they can do. You should tell them that the warranty status is irrelevant as you have six years from the date of purchase in which to bring an action against a retailer when the goods in question are inherently defective.

They may then tell you to contact HP. You should tell them that you purchased from Staples and not from HP so it is entirely Staples' responsibility to resolve the situation.

They will then probably tell you that you need an engineers report.

To be honest though, Staples are one of the best retailers for the way they have been handling this problem so you should not have a problem with them.
