Hi guys, i was looking around on ebay at how much a spares and repair qosmio might go for and stumbled across the below advert. Seems like it might be the real deal but i will defer to capitano LAPCURE for his verdict. Is this genuine. is a fix even possible?

the entire advert is below and the the link is
Code:

Looking forward to your thoughts.

Toshiba Qosmio Motherboard Repair Service

6 Month Warranty with updated chipset fitted

Please note we do not offer a reflow or reball alone for the Toshiba Qosmio G40. For most other Sony, Toshiba models etc, either of these repair options are a suitable option, but through our extensive research we know that the only long-term solution for this model is to fit a brand new updated Nvidia chipset reballed with leaded solder.

We can also fix the "PCI Express Error" for the same price.

To our knowledge we cannot find a UK company offering this so all repairs on ebay are only temporary and will fail again in 2-5months!

Also do not waste your time buying a brand new/used motherboard as it will have the old Nvidia chipset prone to failure.

Please note we are offering our service through 'Buy it Now' format to allow customers to leave feedback. Please be wary of services sold under classified ads which offer little or no comeback.

To adhere to ebay rules the £9.95 buy it now covers: 1. An Initial assesment of your unit with a printed report of the suspected fault, 2. A printed guide how to keep your laptop cooling system free of blockages, and 3. The return postage for your laptop back to you.

If you then require the Standard or Advanced repair to adhere to ebay rules the payment will be made through ebay and can be paid by paypal or a bank transfer.

What faults can we fix?

We can fix graphic/display issues relating to the Nvidia 8600M GT fitted in the Qosmio G40. These are fixed using the appropriate professional equipment

How do I know if I have this problem?

If your Qosmio G40 series has distorted/unusual graphics, Power lights but no display, Vertical lines, Blue screen errors or driver issues the chances are it is related to the Graphics processing unit. If in doubt just ask.

Why does it happen?

Mainly due to excessive heat, and heat cycles but also due to other factors stated in the article below. We often find fans are clogged with fluff and dust preventing the machine cooling how it was designed.

In the Qosmio G40 we have determined that most chipsets themselves are internally faulty.

What are you bidding on?

The 'Buy it Now' Price covers the cost of returning your laptop back to you once the repair is carried out. If we cannot repair we do not charge any additional costs on top of the £9.95.

What is the total cost of the repair?

For most Nvidia based laptops the repair options are the Standard or advanced. We have listed these below for you to read and understand, although for the Qosmio G40 only the 'Brand New Updated Chipset Repair' is Recommended. Most sellers on ebay reflow the chipset which in this model will only last a few months.

Standard Repair - (not suitable for Qosmio G40) We offer a standard repair similar to around 95% of those repairers advertised on ebay for £89 + £9.95 Return Post, Total = £98.95

This involves re-connecting the graphics chip using existing solder - This should last as long as it has from new or longer if fans are kept clean.

Advanced Repair - (not suitable for Qosmio G40) This service offers a more permanent solution and is the recommended method of stopping the problem re-occurring. The advanced repair cost is £139 + £9.95 Return Post, Total £148.95. We highly recommend this repair. Remember if you buy a brand new/second hand board it will always have the lead free solder prone to failure.

The advanced service involves removal of the Graphics chip, removing the old solder and re-fitted using new leaded solder. Leaded solder is proven not to deteriorate from the effects of heat like the current lead free solder used in manufacture.

Brand New Updated Chipset Repair - (only option we recommend for Qosmio G40) This is the same procedure as the above 'Advanced Repair' but in addition we re-fit a Brand New Updated GPU Chipset that has been purposely produced by Nvidia to replace the Faulty GPU Chipset fitted to the Qosmio G40. We also use a copper shim instead of the old heat pad to help keep the laptop running cooler. The cost of this service is £169 + £9.95 Return Post, Total £178.95

**** Special Offer - £10 off making the Updated Chipset Repair £159 + Post! ****

Please note some repair companies will say they are carrying out the advanced repair- reballing (removal of chip) but in fact do not. Ask them for a picture of your board with chip removed. We will be happy to do this. As we are aware we are the only company offering leaded reballing on ebay.

Both services include dismantling, repair and re-assemby and a clean inside and out.

The repair offered above caries a 6 month warranty for the same fault occurring if a brand new updated chipset is fitted. The customer is responsible for all carriage costs.

Payment of £9.95 due before you send the laptop to us. Additional Payment for the service is required once we assess the laptop.

Please send your laptop securely packed and with a proof of signature delivery method.

We can arrange to collect also, please email regarding this.

Email: ebay@bgarepairs.co.uk

Service takes 2-5 days

Hello Taipon1ives,

Welcome back, long time no speak.

How did you get on with your claim? Did you manage to get a resolve?

I would never recommend that one has a repair of this type unless the company offering the repair is prepared to give a written guarantee stating that the repair will be 100% free of the Nvidia defect.

There have been some new GPU's released by Nvidia but as the defect takes time to manifest itself then whether or not these new GPU's will fail only time will tell.

I personally think that the cost to repair is very expensive and to me it would be like throwing good money after bad.

If you were faced with the situation where you are unable to pursue a refund and would have to pay for a repair then I would advise that you put the money towards another laptop rather than pay £170 to have it repaired.

What do you think?

Best wishes

Paul

I never ended up persuing it for various reasons, not least of which was sorting out my wedding and its kind of fallen from my thoughts since. When I heard that Nvidia had released a list of chips that were affected and ours wasnt on the list that did put me off somewhat.

Im not interested in having it repaired i merely thought it interesting that the guy thinks he can repair them, as i didnt think a fix existed.

Seems like the site has really boomed since i was last here.
