Hi everyone!

I have just discovered this website and it is a revelation to me having struggled with my HP Pavilion DV5 for the past two and a half years.

My laptop has all the classic signs described here and I am currently writing this post upside down to try and avoid it overheating for the 100th time today.

I purchased the laptop from PC World in May 2009. I contacted HP about the problem in Dec 2009 but was told my warranty had expired the day before (6 months??) I then went back to PC world who asked me to get an engineers report. A local guy looked at the laptop and said he felt the problem was that it was furred up, he cleaned it out for £15 and i thought that was a cheap and simple fix. The problems have continued ever since and I was about to give it up as a bad job, which i terrible considering the cost of the machine.

My first question is how can I tell whether my laptop is an affected model?

I would be very grateful if anyone can assist. The info on the white label is dv5 - 111OEM. S/N CNF8401FQB.

Hello Milesmum and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear of the problems you have been experiencing with your laptop.

Your particular model of laptop contains an ATI GPU rather than an Nvidia GPU so the problems you are experiencing cannot be caused by the Nvidia defect.

When you are using the laptop can you hear the fan spinning?

When the engineer cleaned out the laptop did he replace the thermal paste?

The heat sink mechanism in that model of laptop is notoriously bad and so may need replacing.
Would you also please elaborate on the overheating problem. Does the laptop actually switch off or does it freeze?

Please let me know and I will advise further.

Best wishes

Paul

Hi Paul,

Yes the fan spins like the computer is about to take off and then it switches off.

You can see the heat trace up the screen.

The computer also does the 'black screen' mentioned by other writers and the wifi connection is also problematic. Laterly, it has developed a further fault where you can only view the screen fully extended or almost closed, otherwise the picture breaks up completely.

It was only cleaned out, however he did install a core temp monitor and it regular exceeds 100 degrees, I have had burnt legs more than once!

Hello Milesmum,

Wow, 100°c is not good. That is 1°c above the boiling point of water and you would not want a kettle on your lap would you?

The problem with the picture breaking up is not necessarily related to the overheating issue and could be related either to the LCD panel itself or the cable that connects the LCD panel to the mainboard.

It is difficult to be able to state categorically which of the two is at fault without inspecting the laptop, though it sounds like it could be the cable, which will be the cheaper of the two faults to fix.

I would say that the overheating problem that you are experiencing is related to the heat sink aperture and could possibly be resolved by changing the heat sink for one of the news revised models.

It will only be possible to determine the true cause of the problem by examining your laptop as at the moment it is only guesswork that the heat sink is the root cause of the problem.

If you would like me to take a look at your laptop with a view to establishing the cause of the overheating then please let me know.

Best wishes

Paul
