Hi guys and girls

My better half got this laptop from PC world back in 2008 on their deal with 3 mobile, sign up for a £35 a month mobile b/band contract and get a "free" laptop. So all was good and after the contract finished we had a nice wee laptop with a decent spec, or so i thought anyway. some 2- 3months ago the laptop booted to the 6-8 mini screen images, (something i have since found to be common symptom of the dread fault) Now i have had some minor issues before with black screen booting and lock downs with blue screens etc, but all were over come with some time and a reboot etc.

So after finding your site on my 1st attempt at goggling it i decide to take action and contact my local store. Knowing the business manger at my local PC World i obtained copies of my original receipts, which to my horror stated that i had paid a paltry £0.06 for the laptop itself!!!!

Well not down heartened i decided to go for a replacement at least and see where it got me. So i contacted the customer services in store and was told the usual "not our responsibility its out of warranty". After a few minutes of trying to explain, the Business manager saw me and came over, he immediately gave me head office address and told me to contact them with stated fault and possible solution, all though EVERYONE of them played dumb to the nvidia defect having NEVER heard of it.

I sent off a copy of your template letter stating i wanted a repair or replacement, being careful not to mention refund (not wanting a cheque for 6p lol), and was contacted this morning by DSG executive offices and told to send an engineers report but also advised that i would not receive anymore than £150 toward a new laptop as the laptop only retailed for £300ish at time of purchase. Now i didnt accept this i merely told them i would send an engineers report to confirm the fault.

Now my questions :)

1st Surely if it was defective from date of purchase then im entitled to a replacement of similar spec?
2nd At my time of purchase the laptop would have cost WAY more than £300 but i have no way to prove this any ideas?

Thanks

Hello Xmarksthescot and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear that your laptop has failed.

The trouble with the position you are in is how to extrapolate the cost of the broadband from the total price you paid in order to correctly determine the cost of the laptop.

It is all well and good them saying that the laptop cost £0.06p but you and I know that is baloney as the cost of the laptop has to be recovered from somewhere.

How long was the contract you signed up to and how much did you pay in total.

Please let me know and I will advise further.

Best wishes

Paul

Hi Paul and thanks for the welcome, also a massive thanks for providing such a wealth of info if it were not for you and your advice on here i wouldn't even have been offered the £150 :D

The plan i was on was £35 per month for a full 18 month term.

I have noticed some of the other users on here had purchased the same machine and as it was a limited edition laptop in a shocking white and orange case i guess there weren't that many or it was not available at retail for a long time. And they bought the machine or rather state to have bought, for round about £600

Their suggestion of "half" retail value at time of purchase is crap, has any1 on here ever seen a laptop at PC World for £300, never mind 3 years ago LMAO.

Anyway hope info helps some more

Hello,

Based on £35 per month for 18 months means a total contract price of £630.

Within that £630 has to be an allowance for the actual broadband. If we were to say that the broadband cost £20 per month (£360 for the 18 month contract) then the laptop would have cost £270 (£630 - £360).

As the laptop lasted for 3 years then you would be entitled to roughly half back which would equate to roughly £135.

I therefore have to say that their offer of £150 is on a par with what one would expect if one was to assume that the broadband element of the contract was indeed £20. If the broadband element was less than £20 per month then the refund would be increased.

I would say that if you can get them to increase their offer slightly then that would be a good resolution for you. As it stands, they are not a million miles away with their current offer.

What do you think?

Best wishes

While i can see your thinking there mate, i would say that the broadband would have been about £15 per month, but this wouldnt add much to the offer anyway.

But as the machine was defective from manufacture and they knew about the defective 8600M GPU's then i would say they have had 3 years to recall or replace the machine before now! And that if it was defective from manufacture then i should be entitled to a replacement.

Anyway i now have an engineers report on the machine, if i can find some proof as to its retail price at purchase date then i stand a better footing, so ill have a hunt see if i can find that before getting back to them.

UPDATE

Spoke to the business manager at my local PC world and he agrees that £300 retail value is BS, he said if i came he will search their db for some proof of a higher price round about my time of purchase.

So PC World are helping me fight PC World!! Pure class :D
