I've just been talking with Paul about my laptop and I can't make up my mind whether to feel disappointed or pleased.

Disappointed because Paul has confirmed that it's not suffering from the defect so I won't have the 'fun' of issuing a Small Claims action against Comet. :(

Pleased because Paul has quoted me a good price to get my laptop up & running again :D

STAFF FROM THE LARGE RETAILERS (we know you read this forum) TAKE NOTE:

Here is some proof that Paul does look at each of the laptops individually when writing these reports. Oh, and whilst you're here, spend some time looking at how Paul operates - he can teach you a lot about customer service!

Thank you for your post and very kind words.

I can understand your disappointment, I bet you were looking forward to a sparkling new laptop.

If it does fail again in the future then I will refund what you have paid by way of providing you with a free report.

Hope that is good for you.

Best wishes

Paul

I was looking forward to a new laptop but I still quite like the HP (I know - very sad) and, at the end of the day anything has got to be better than the IBM Thinkpad 600E I'm currently having to use at home (Pentium 2 300Mhz processor for those of you who've never come across one). Having said that, it must be around 10 years old and the only thing that's ever gone wrong with it is the bios battery failing.

Thanks for the free report offer - hopefully I won't have to take you up on it.

As mentioned on the phone, I still intend to hang around the forum as I feel that my knowledge of court procedures could be useful here.

All the best,

Martin

I am sure we all appreciate your input already so that is good to hear. I may need your help as I am sure Comet will send me down the court route.

I am like you, I still like HP laptops and my next one MAY still be HP (yes, I am probably a fool) but it will definitely not have a nvidia GPU.

Hi all another one wo has stumbled across this site I do not know whether or not I have Nvidia defect but I have a HP G6000 purchased from Teco early 2008(i'm still awaiting for EGG to confirm the exact purchase date)

The symptoms are that the lights, the blue power light & fans come on once the power button is pressed, stay on for about 2 seconds and then the thing just switches off again. Following this, the notebook decides to go through this process every 5 seconds, and the only way to stop it is to remove and reinsert the battery. This happens with and without the power pack being attached.

Probably completely off topic but if so I apologise and if you could point me in the right direction it would be great

Hello Cushley and welcome to our forum.

The Nvidia defect can manifest itself in many ways and the problem you describe is one of the symptoms.

The only real way to tell is by stripping the laptop and testing the GPU.

Have you contacted Tesco yet?

Don't let them fob you off with the "sorry but you are out of warranty" spiel, you have six years from the date of purchase to take acttion against a retailer when the goods in question are inherently defective.

If you need any help or advice on this matter then please let me know.

Best wishes

Paul

Right, first of all, brilliant site, I've got an Inspiron 1520 with the demon 8600M GT that I've been babying to stop the Nvidia defect from claiming it, and it's good to know that I'll have a leg to stand on as far as refunds/replacements go if it does give up the ghost.

I'm posting in this thread on behalf of a work colleague whose laptop (a G6065EA) is exhibiting exactly the same symptoms - no POST, a continuous cycle of powering up for two seconds, shutting off, and restarting until you yank the battery. It came from Comet around 2 years ago, so I'm expecting the whole "blah blah out of warranty" spiel, but I'd like some advice as to how to go about getting somewhere with them.

Oh, and sorry for the thread necromancy, but I couldn't find any others with the same symptoms.
