where to start...

i bought my laptop a TX2050EA in march 2008 from PC World and in april 2009 the wireless card failed.

Beliving this to be a software update issue i re-mastered (formatted back to factory state) the problem disapeared, then i rebooted and it returned? odd i thought but turns out it was because the laptop got hot enough while it was remastering to temporally resolder the wifi card joints! looking into the issue further i found the hplies forum and read deeper.

looking at the spec of my laptop (Nvida GO 6150 graphics card) and the symptoms i saw i diagnosed that my laptop as with many other possibly had the dreaded nvidia defect. i procedded to check the forums for my specific model but only found 2 other people with the tx2000 range expericancing this problem. but reading into it the dv range that is mainly effected took around 2 years before numbers increased and owing that my laptop was released just over a year ago there are not many people effected. any ways enough rambling.

i first tried to aproch the store where purchased the laptop from and tried speaking to the manager that under the sale of goods act.... blah...blah this didnt work and was told that i need to talk to the customer contact team.

I then requested they telephoned them as i was not going to phone a premium rate number (i could of used saynoto0870, but thats not the point) i spoke to some arragent lady who would not listen to what i had to say. all she said was tough its over its 12 mounth period you didnt purchase extended warranty tough.

i asked to speak to her manager and she refused but did tell me i need to post them an engineers report stating that my laptop was inherntly faulty before purchase. this made me furious so i wrote them a nice letter including an engineers report that suggests that my laptop is showing the syptoms of said nvidia defect and i also included some refereances from Hplies.com. after two weeks i then recieved a leter back stating that the engineers report was not clear evidence that my laptop was effected by this defect and i would be required to produce another one. as theese reports cost money and i had already done my duty under the sale of goods act i contacted consumer direct and told them my experiance. they said i had done everything correct and then said that they would pass this case onto trading standards.

after 4 days i had a nice phone call from trading standards and they requested all my correspondance so i emailed all my correspondance accross to them. within 4 weeks they eventually got PC World to admit they are responsible and to collect the laptop for an engineer to look at. PC World then had the laptop for 4 weeks i got frustrated and telephoned trading standards asking them what was happening. I was then told that the laptop required a new mother board but the problem was found to be unrelated to the graphics processor, but as a good will PC World will still repair the laptop free of charge? fishy if you ask me. so in the end i got it fixed anyone want to buy it before it dies again, as im sure the same problem will occur in 13 months time.

hope this helps somebody else with there case

Well done Chillmaster!

At least you got a free repair which, I suppose, is better than nothing.

Good luck with the laptop and I hope it lasts longer than the last one.

Best wishes

Paul

thanks paul. if it wans't for your site and hplies i dont think i would of had the ammo to fight my corner.

im still thinking about implementing the mod shown on youtube to help make your laptop last longer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ctHTF3oNdxI

not sure if that would work but if it happens again i might use a penny to increase the heat conductance of the heat sink?

one more thing i find it really strange that HP are not admitting there is a fault with this range of laptop but i went into PC World the other day and the new touch smart range of laptops the TX2 which is the same spec as mine but with a ATI GPU?? why the sudden change HP???? LOL

steve.

Hello Chillmaster,

I have used that mod when repairing these laptops for a long time now.

The penny MUST be the old copper type, if you are not sure then get a magnet and if the penny doesn't stick to the magnet then its copper.

I have found that using this mod I get a drop in temperature of around 20-25C so it is more than worth using.

Regarding the change in GPU's in the newer HP laptops, serves Nvidia right for that.

Maybe if they had been more honest in the first place they wouldn't be loosing market share as fast as the banks are loosing money :)

Best wishes

Paul

I have received an offer over the phone today from pc world of £530. That will do nicely thank you. I will never ever buy anything from Hewlett Packard again. not even an ink cartridge and will steer well clear of anything Nvidia also. Thank you paul and lapcure for all your help, I would be £530 out of pocket if I hadn't found this web site. thank you :D

After having the motherboard replaced free by pcworld under the sales of goods act nearly 3 years ago. blue screens again and byebye laptop, it wouldnt power on anymore :( i have attempted to repair myself this time as it states in the sale of goods act that you can gain a free repair if the product its deemed faulty up to 6 years or a period of reasonalble amount of time. im assuming 4 years of use is pushing it. so i tried the solder re-flow technique shown on many websites, which involves using a heat gun to re-melt the GPU contacts, this failed in my case :( After numerous attempts i actaully managed to cause the GPU to bubble and one of the caps blow off the top!!. so its well and truely dead now! After a lot of searching around for the motherboard online with the part-number 463649-001 i found a site called buymotherboard.net and they are selling modified boards which have been re-balled with leaded solder. This means the GPU that caused the problem has been removed from the motherboard and then re-soldered using leaded solder which is more tollerant to heat as lead-free solder, so in theory the board will last longer. the website does look a bit shady with the pigeon english, but it is based in hong kong and for £58 delivered ive taken the punt. I recived my tracking number today and there is a parcel on its way to me so ile let you all know if the board works when i get it. might be someones saving grace for £58!! I was going to purchase a new laptop but theres no laptop on the market that offeres both the option of being a laptop and tablet for a decent ish price and the spec of the machine is still capable of running the windows 8 beta so shes good for another few years yet.
