Hi Paul,
My friends Dell has just died with the blank screen.
Do yo know if this machine has this dreaded graphics card?

Any advice appreciated.

Hello Swifty,

That laptop, the Inspiron 1525, contains an Intel GPU rather than an Nvidia one so it certainly is not affected.

There could be a number of reasons for the black screen. Are there any blinking LED's on the laptop console?

If you stare hard at the screen is there a very faint image in the background? If not then you could also try removing the RAM and inserting them one at a time to see if is the RAM that has failed.
