:nh Hi i have a sony vaio VGN-NR31J,this is not in the list of problem computers but definately has the Nvidia effect...when i turn the laptop on it has lots of multi-colour squares all over the screen and then goes to lots of funny lines and so blurred you cant really see anything...after much research on line i have discovered it is a problem with my graphics card which is Nvidia GeForce 8400 GT....i have tried contacting sony but they are not interested (im not on the list so they wont help :j )...im not really sure what i can do as this was a replacement laptop via my insurance (hubby spilt coke in the first 1  )...so i dont know where it was purchased and if i qualify for any help at all :?: .....i also have another vaio but doesnt have this make of card and works great...why cant sony accept its a fault within that card and replace/repair any computer that they put it into rather than limiting it to certain models...if it comes to it can the card be replaced,as ive read in a couple of forums that some you cant, and if so what do i buy to replace it with...i obviously dont want to buy the same card :c ....please help me :w ...thankyou

Hello Susie and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear that your laptop has failed.

Your situation is a little tricky insofar as you didn't actually purchase the laptop but received it as part of an insurance settlement.

However, if your laptop is indeed inherently defective then you should contact the insurance company and should tell them that the laptop they supplied is inherently defective and ask what they can do.

They will probably state that there is nothing they can do. You should then tell them that as the laptop was given as settlement to your insurance claim then it is not of satisfactory quality.

Prior to failure did the laptop get hot to the point that you couldn't use it on your lap?

If so, depending on the temperatures reached then the laptop could be classed as a potential danger to your health and safety. I have seen laptops reach in excess of 125c and am actually currently testing a Sony VGN-NR21Z where the temperature is reaching 115c.

You should forget trying to pursue Sony as you have no contract with them and they will not be willing to help you.

Start off by calling the insurance company nice and friendly and tell them that the laptop they supplied you with is inherently defective and you would like a replacement or some other form of settlement. Tell them that the problem relates to the Nvidia defect and affects laptops worldwide. You can even refer them to this site so they can see the thousands of affected customers.

Just because Sony have not admitted to the defect in your laptop does not mean that your laptop is not inherently defective.

If The insurance company fail to comply then you should step up the heat a little by threatening them with court action on the basis that they supplied you with a laptop that is inherently defective and that was not of satisfactory quality.

What do you think?

If you have any questions then please let me know.

Best wishes

Paul

Thankyou for your reply...i will try contacting my insurance company tomorrow and see what they say :) ....and in answer to your question-yes the laptop did get extremely hot,to the point where you couldnt rest it on your legs, the fan was also really noisy...i only know as we have 2 and the other one VGN-NR38E doesnt do either of these things...i did wonder at first if it was over-heating and causing the problem as since this started happening on monday the laptop has actually started up normally on 3 occasions (out of about 100  ) but doesnt want to know now...i will let you know if i get any success with my insurance :x ...thanks again....Susie
