 I have lovingly called my HP TX1138EA a craptop as that really some up what it is useful for, despite it showing all the signs of the nvidia defect I got this letter from John Lewis after sending the standard form on the forum (thanks ) . John Lewis wrote back to me saying they spoke at length with HP who surprise surprise deny the fault. :?:

Can anyone suggest what I should say to them next?

Hello and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear that your laptop has failed.

Of course HP have denied that there is a problem with your laptop. That is exactly what they say about virtually all the other laptops that fail which are not on their "list".

You should take absolutely no notice of it whatsoever.

The fact that HP do not admit that your laptop is inherently defective does not mean that it is not. We have proved, many many times, that there are a whole raft of HP laptops which are inherently defective yet not on their wholly inadequate "list".

Please could you let me know the symptoms of the defect that you are experiencing and I will advise further.

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes

Paul

Hiya
thanks for this forum its the only place that I have found some useful information !

the issues with the laptop are screen will not show up on starting only blue LEDs at edge fire up, wireless failure. I can hear the HDD whirring but cannot see anything on the screen, even connecting an external monitor will do nothing.

HP told me to update BIOS this didnt work.

There are some tricks to get the screen running like pressing down on the J , K , L buttons simultaneously (very hard) thus pushing the chip back onto mounting?? (something like that). Its a bit hit and miss though.

hope that helps.

Hello,

All the problems you describe are indeed manifestations of the defect.

I did a quick check for you to see if I could find any further information on your model of laptop and found this:- http://fairnvidiasettlement.com/bad-hp-notebooks/

If you scroll down the list you will find your model of laptop. There you will find the following statement:-

Quote:
PLEASE NOTE: All HP Pavilion Tx1xxx models purchased between March 2007 and May 31, 2008 are eligible to participate in the settlement, regardless of the Product Identification Number displayed on the computer. If you choose to file a claim, you will still need to complete a Claim Form and provide the required information, but you will not be required to provide a Product Identification Number

So, this is more evidence of HP's knowledge of the defect in your model of laptop so why HP have denied it is beyond me.

How were you supposed to update the BIOS if you didn't have a display? I would say that would be pretty much impossible!

Pressing down on the keyboard can cause the laptop to work again because, like you said, this causes the fractured solder balls on the BGA grid or between the die and substrate to close and so allow your laptop to work.

I would now contact John Lewis and would tell them that you are not happy with their response. I would further tell them that unless they are prepared to comply with their obligations under the Sale Of Goods Act then you will have no option but to obtain an engineers report and use that as evidence in a small claims action.

See what they say. If they capitulate then great. If not then you should proceed with the next step in the step by step guide.

The guide that is available on this forum will help you reach a positive resolution and that is here:- post13.html#p13

If you follow my advice in that guide then you will be successful.

If you have any questions or if you need any advice then please let me know.

Good luck and best wishes

Paul
