Hello Maz and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear that your laptop has failed.

I did a quick check on the HP support site to see if I could find out any further information on your laptop and found the following:- http://tinyurl.com/6d3vpv7

This is the BIOS update for your model of laptop. On the 25th March 2008 HP released a BIOS update for your laptop. The purpose of this update, according to HP was:-

Quote:
Updates the fan-control algorithm for the system to reduce the likelihood of future system issues.

This proves that as early as 25th March 2008 HP must have been well aware of the potential for your laptop to overheat - otherwise why release a BIOS update that switched the fans on continuously to the detriment of the battery?

I also note that this update was released FIVE MONTHS BEFORE you purchased the laptop. HP really should have recalled your model of laptop and should have notified all stores that had stock to return it unsold.

Unfortunately, the writing was on the wall from the date you purchased the laptop and it was inevitable that the laptop would fail prematurely.T

You stated in your post that your laptop has simply crashed. What do you mean by this? What problems are you experiencing?

Please let me know and I will advise further.

Best wishes

Paul

Hi Paul,

Thanks a lot for your detailed response.
Actually my laptop has suddenly stopped working. It would not load, its just a blank screen as if its shutdown. It does not even load BIOS. Only LEDs on the body light up.

I have contacted Tesco and they totally denied me nay free repair or replacement. They say its out of warranty and i need to pay to get it fixed. I told them its manufacturing fault but they say they wont do anything as its out of warranty.

The BIOS update shows they knew about the problem and still sold me the laptop.

Please can you guide me on how i could get it fixed.
Regards,
Maz

Hi,

Please can you guide how to confirm that my laptop has stopped working due to nvidia defect. Is there any way of confirming it before i proceed with Tesco on this issue.
Thanks
Maz

Hello Maz,

Sorry that I overlooked your previous post.

Absolute baloney! Take no notice of them when they say that as they do not know what they are talking about.

The Sale Of Goods Act 1979 states that you have SIX YEARS from the date of purchase in which to take action against a retailer when the goods in question are inherently defective. The status of your warranty is absolutely irrelevant.

Don't let this put you off. This is a standard fob off by Tesco and is to be expected.

The next step is to send them a letter before action. A template letter can be found here:- download/letter_before_action.doc

You should download that, edit it with your details and send it to Tesco's Head Office via recorded delivery.

Please ensure that you keep a copy of the letter and postal receipt.

If after seven days you have not received a response then you should proceed to the next step in the guide.

There is a step by step guide on this forum that will help you reach a positive resolution and that is here:- post13.html#p13

If you follow my advice in that guide then you will be successful.

If you have any questions of if you need any advice then please let me know.

Best wishes

Paul

Practically if it has the signs and symptoms then it is the 'nividia defect'

however there is only one way to prove beyond doubt that the retailers will accept and that is for an engineer to test it .

You can arrange your own engineer locally, but I would recommend using 'Lapcure'.

Just take note that Paul ( Lapcure) is away for a few days, and will not be able to arange collection till his return.

Hello Maz,

The signs are varied but include loss of wireless, artefacts on the screen, distorted images, blank screen, laptop constantly cycling (turning on, turning off ad infinitum.

The problems you describe are indeed signs of the defect though there is no sure way to know 100% that this is the case until it has been tested.

What I will say is if you send the laptop to ourselves for a report and I find that it is not the defect then all you would pay is for the cost of the collect and return carriage, which is £20.

I cannot say fairer than that.

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes
