Hi everyone,

I just really wanted to say how invaluable the advice given on this forum is, and thanks for all the hard work.

I too purchased a HP laptop from Comet in September 08, and then last week I turned my laptop on and no picture appeared on the screen. I hooked my laptop up to the telly through the HDMI lead and it worked fine. I was all set (reluctantly) to go out and buy a new one, but after googling the problem I found out that thousands of people have had the same problem and a friend in work told me about this site.

Yesterday I went into my local comet and explained the situation. The man I spoke to mentioned the 6 year rule (so they are obviously aware of the situation), and told me I need an engineers report before I brought the computer back. When I asked him do I send the report straight to their head office, he told me to bring it back to the store along with the laptop and a copy of my reciept.

So today I have dropped the laptop of at a local computer shop, the man in the shop said straight away is it a hp dv2000 and said they are just gonna check the software on it and should be able to determine whether its a defective chip or not.

I will be picking my laptop up early next week and as soon as I know the outcome will keep you posted on what happens with Comet.

Thanks again for all your hard work, without this forum I would never have known the process needed to try and determine whether there is a defect and what to do next if my suspicions are confirmed.

Hello Liverbird and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear that your laptop has failed.

I took a quick look on the HP support website and found this:- http://tinyurl.com/26a6a8l

This is the BIOS update page for your laptop.

On the 8th April 2008 HP released a BIOS update for your model of laptop. The purpose of the update, according to HP, is:-

Quote:
Turns the system FAN on at the lowest speed, when the notebook is powered on.

This proves that as early as 8th April 2008 HP realised that there was a problem with your model of laptop - hence the need to switch the fans on continuously to the detriment of the battery.

I note that you purchased the laptop in September - some 5 months AFTER the BIOS update. HP should not have allowed the continued sale of this model of laptop if there was an overheating issue.

Please let me know once you have the report and I will advise further.

Good luck and best wishes

Paul

A quick update on my progress....

I recieved the engineers report last week which states the issue is with a faulty chip. I took my computer into my local comet store last week who said if I havent heard anything to call them today. I recieved a voicemail yea=sterday from a company stating they can fix my computer for £125.49 and theres a 30% discount on a new motherboard which will cost me £75.50 plus labour of49.99.

I'm off to speak to comet again today to explain again that I am not willing to pay for the repair and will not except a repair unless they give me a written guarantee that this will not happen again....

Wish me luck...

Hello Liverbird,

Did your report state that your laptop is inherently defective? I know you mentioned that your report states that it has a faulty chip, but does it state inherently defective?

If so then how dare Comet try and charge you. They are responsible for the fact that they sold you an inherently defective laptop and so under no circumstances should you pay them a single penny.

I would get back in touch with them and would tell them that unless they comply with their legal obligations to you then you will, without further communication with them, file a small claims action.

Absolutely scandalous behavior if you ask me.

Good luck and best wishes
