I sent a copy of the report to play.com and they have offered me £127.50. They said due to age and usage they could only offer me a partial refund and have no suitable laptops to offer as a replacement. I don't feel like this is good enough. What should i do? Many thanks again. Robin.

Hi , Paul is away this week .........

this is an example of the calculation that Paul would use

1) A Laptop should last five years which = 60 months.
2) You paid £350 for the laptop.
3) £350 / 60 = £5.83 (monthly figure)
4) You had 32 months use of the laptop.
5) 60 months - 32 months use = 28 months remaining usage.
6) 28 * £5.83 = £163.33

The figgs will be different in each case ....

other cost should be taken into consideration as well

Engineers cost
Your personal time used to investigate and deal with this matter

Hope that helps

Ralph

That is way too low - it would be interesting to know how they're working out that sum but it's almost as if they're using a lifespan of 3 years once you take the cost of a report into the equation.

My rough calculations show that a court would award you just under £200 for the laptop plus any incidental expenditure (at the moment this would just be the cost of the report). You're therefore looking for around double what they're currently offering. :o

Guys,

This is my first post so appologies if I've answered in the 'wrong' place but reading what has been going on is exactly the same as what has happened to mine (DV6231eu) also bought from Play.com as few years ago.

The only difference is that the idle temp is only 51 degrees and seems quite normal. I haven't run the stress test yet but I have tried everything else including the BIOS upgrade hich may have cured the temp issue???

I have tried everything to get the laptop to see the wireless card again but no joy (not in device manager and switch permanently orange/off).

Do you think the chip is still faulty and the other things will fail or should I just buy a wireless dongle and carry on?

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

David

Hi David and welcome to the forum,

The wireless failing is normally one of the first signs of the defect. I would try running the stress test to see what the temperature gets up to.

Many thanks and I will run them tonight.

Is other stuff likely to fail again? In other words buying a wireless USB stick will not solve the problem in the long run.

Best regards,

David

Assuming it is the defect causing your problems then a wireless usb stick is a short term fix. Unfortunately, once the defect takes hold then it's only a matter of time before it fails completely. :(

Hello Tucks and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear of the problems you are experiencing with your laptop.

I did a quick check on your model number at the HP website and found this:- http://tinyurl.com/38f57aq

This is a BIOS update that HP released for your laptop. You will note that one of the "fixes" of this BIOS update is to:-

Quote:
Updates the fan control algorithm of the system to reduce the likelihood of future system issues

This proves that as early as 30th November 2011 HP were well aware for the potential for the premature failure of your laptop.

The loss of wireless is one of the first manifestations of the defect and so it will be easy to prove that the defect exists in your laptop.

There is a step by step guide available on this forum, the link is in my signature at the foot of this post. If you follow my advice in that post then you will reach a positive resolution.

If you have any questions or if you need any advice then please let me know.

Please keep us updated on your progress.

Best wishes

Paul

Paul,

Many thanks for the update and I did upgrade the BIOS a while ago now, before the Wireless started to fail.

i have just run the 'stress test' and my GPU is running about 88 degrees (even low 80's on idle sometimes without the Rthdrbl running). Although this is not as hot as some posts being >100 degrees but still quite hot I think.

Even though everything else seems to be running OK, with the permanent loss of wireless connectivity and this high GPU figure (together with evidence of HP's knowledge etc etc), do you still think I have a case to pursue the retailer, Play.com in this case, for a replacement or refund?

I could live with a USB dongle in the side for internet access but everything points to this is only the start so I might as well try to get it sorted now?

One more thing. I saw a post from someone trying to get Play.com to sort out their laptop and was only offered £127 compensation. Is it not the case that they need to provide a replacement or a full refund?

Many thanks and regards,

David
