Originally bought this laptop from PCworld in Sep 2007 for £399.99

Around August 2009 I noticed the 'blank screen, some lights, and then constantly rebooting'....this NVIDIA sympton sounds very familiar to me. Mine only starts up normally maybe 30% of the time, so gave up using it, but guess one days its going to fail completely one day.
Very bad considering the machine has had very little use during its short life.

I tried TechGuys in Aug 2009 and they said its out of warranty and tough luck!! Since then its been an attractive door stop. Very interested to see your site that I might be able to do something about it.
Will go to the local branch tomorrow and see what they say...

Ok, went down to my local store (Charlton), techguys said up to one year they would deal with it, anything else i would have to take up directly with Hp and/or Nvidia. Pretty much as i expected.
He gave me the head office address Dixons Retail, Maylands Avenue,Hemel Hempstead,Herts,HP2 7TG to write to instead.
Not much progress but I guess we have to go through the process to get to the end eh??

One question, I have an issue with data protection with the info on the hard drive. If I asked your people to provide a report, would you need to inspect the laptop with the original hard drive in place?
If they hopefully eventually offer compensation or replacement, would they expect the broken laptop returned to them?

Who on earth trains these guys? On second thoughts judging by their knowledge of the Sale Of Goods Act it looks like they all skipped the training bit.



So your next step is the letter before action. There is a template here:- download/letter_before_action.doc

You should download that, edit it with your details and send it to the address thy gave you via recorded delivery.

If after seven days they have failed to respond then you should proceed with an engineers report.

Ok, an update. Got a letter from Head Office. They asked that i take the laptop to my local store and confirm that it is non-functioning, although this consisted of just turning it on and watching it sit there doing nothing.
Head Office then agreed on the phone that its probably not worth trying to repair, and offered me £150 in vouchers, although they later offered £150 as a cheque, although this might take a few days to organise.
They also said that if they pay-up, they would need to take the old unit for 'recycling', much as an insurance company does for motor insurance when a 'write-off', so I would need to wipe the hard drive of my data before handing it in.
They said the offer of money was based upon the original price paid, and the date the claim was made, in my case December 2010, when then laptop was 3years and 3 months old.
So its good news they playing ball, but as worked out that the laptop originally started playing up after only 11months, and has been just sitting around collecting dust for two years, so might try and see if they will up the offer.

It is good news that you are moving forward.

Their offer is also roughly in line with what you would expect to receive. Why not tell them that you will accept their offer on condition that they let you keep the laptop. They have let many others keep their laptops so this is not out of the ordinary.

If they do then you could sell it in its current condition on Ebay for around £100.
