Hi

Just stumbled into this forum this morning after switching on my lappy to discover the screen displayed 6 indv screens, that got as far as the 'windows loading' screen and then went blank and with no hdd activity. So did a wee google search and thats how i got here. Before I start my story the laptop contains the chip 8600m GT so I hope this still qualifies as well (specs are here http://www.notebookcheck.net/Packard-Be ... 774.0.html )

So it all started in april 2010 my laptop 1 morning switched on without the display on at all, but the hdd still had activity, so i tried everything i could think of, checked the hdmi output, dvi output, reset, restored, all very difficult with out a screen to do and with no end. So it wasnt until August that i randomly came across a site that said if u take the motherboard out and remove all components bake in the oven for 8 min and re-assemble, it might set the chip back in, and i could not believe it when i put it back together it worked :!
The site did say it was prob temporary as it doest fix the problem but more extends the life and right they were because until this morning it was working fine.

So there u go its obviously out of warranty and i have opened the laptop my self so will i still be ok?

Thanks in advance

Jamie R

Hello Jamie and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear of the problems you are experiencing with your laptop.

You should have no problems in pursuing a claim against the retailer. After all, when you opened your laptop you were not to know that it was inherently defective so they cannot use that against you.

I have a few questions to see if we can help you.

1) Did you purchase in the UK?
2) Can you prove purchase? (A receipt or debit/credit card statement)
3) How did you pay? (If you paid by credit card then you have extra protection)
4) Who did you purchase from?

If you let me know the answers to the above then I will advise further.

Best wishes

Paul

Excellent, youcan now proceed with a claim under the Sale Of Goods Act.

A receipt is not important. You can also prove purchase by showing the transaction on a credit card statement. I note that you have closed your account with the card company, but they still have this information and will provide a copy statement (if you cannot find the original) on request. This may cost you up to £5.

Excellent news as the credit card company are jointly and severally liable with the retailer in situations such as this.

It does not matter that you have since closed your account with the card company as they still have an obligation in law to assist you upon request.

If you fail to get a positive response from PC World then you should make a Section 75 claim with the credit card company. You should only do this if your attempts at getting PC World to comply prove fruitless.

Your first step then should be to try and find the credit card statement that shows the laptop transaction. If you cannot find it then you should make contact with your credit card company and request a copy.

In the meantime you should contact PC World and tell them that you believe your laptop is inherently defective due to the Nvidia defect.

They may try to fob you off by stating that your laptop is out of warranty. You should tell them that the warranty status is irrelevant as you have six years from the date of purchase to take action against a retailer if the goods in question are inherently defective.

They may then tell you to contact HP. You should tell them that you purchased from PC World and not from HP so it is up to PC World to provide a remedy.

There is a step by step guide available in this forum that will help you receive either a refund or a replacement laptop and that is here:- post13.html#p13

If you follow my advice in that guide then you will reach a positive resolution.

If you have any questions or if you need any advice then please let me know.

Good luck and best wishes

Paul

Is it a typo or has HP got something to do with Packard Bell?

Hello Jamie,

Glad you spotted the deliberate mistake.

Of course I did mean Packard Bell and not HP.

Sorry for the confusion.

Best wishes

UPDATE

Im a bit slow on the old communication you will have to forgive as I work 14 hours a day.

But anyway, contacted PC world today and they have started a case file to be sent to their 'out of warranty' department so should hear back from them sometime soon. As noted I took down all names and times of all the people I have spoke to during these phone calls.

Will update on futher news later :)

PS Thanks for your help so far Paul, much appreciated

JR

Update:

PC world called me back and asked if I could bring the laptop into them just to check the defect, so I agreed the guy turned it on went yeah that's pooped lol and called my case manager to tell him which resulted in a £300 cash back :)

Im happy with that, its nearly 3 years old now, and saves a lot of hassle so once again thanks very much for all your help and guidance Paul I am in your debt.

Good luck to all you others out there too.
