Morning all first time poster here, stumbled upon this website from a google search and it seems like it could hold the answers to my questions and help solve my (sisters) problems.

My sister has a Packard Bell ARES GP2W (nVidia GeForce 8600M GS gpu) laptop which came from pc world in 2007 although she does not have the receipt as her ex bf bought it as a gift so I am here for advice to help diagnose and possibly repair the laptop rather than make a claim against a retailer (if this laptop was subject to the nvidia fault).

The problems with the laptop started a month or so ago with vertical lines on the screen during post and sometimes present within windows, video corruption? After a reinstall of windows the lines were no longer present in windows but were still present during the post. Furthermore and i'm not sure if this is related but after the reinstall any nvidia driver installation stopped windows from booting, I put this down to driver problems although I did try half a dozen different drivers including the older known working ones so in the end I had to leave just the standard windows driver installed.

Two weeks ago my sister turned the laptop on in the evening (it had been working that morning) and it was just a black screen. Upon looking myself there appears to be zero output to the monitor not a backlight fault as you can not see anything at all, however output via the dvi to a monitor works fine but there is still video corruption during post.

Sorry to bang on alot, I know nothing puts people of more then long winded posts but hopefully there is some experience here that can help me. I am not a novice to computers at all although I am still baffled somewhat with the corruption now only present during post and why installing drivers prevented it booting up (both in vista & 7)

thanks in advance, Lee

Hello Tiffllee and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear of the problem your sister is experiencing with her laptop.

It certainly does sound like the Nvidia defect.

The fact the the laptop is only working in VGA mode suggests that the GPU is unable to switch modes and is also one of the manifestations of the defect.

Unfortunately, you said you sisters ex-boyfriend purchased it. This means that it is only him that can seek redress against the retailer with regard to repair/replacement/refund of the laptop.

The "sales contract" is with him and in law it is he who the retailer has an obligation to.

In your position the only thing you can really do is to attempt a rework on the laptop.

This is not always guaranteed to last - but it is a solution if you need it.

If this is something that may be of interest then please email me at nvidia@lapcure.com and I will send you more information.

Good luck and best wishes

Paul
