Laptop Make: Dell
Model: XPS 1530

Hi All,
I have bought the Dell XPS 1530 Laptop in September2008. The Laptop is presently out of warranty. I am facing this issue:

When i switch on the laptop, the laptop gets on, lights blink across the top right keyboard, fans run, but there is nothing on the screen. Screen looks as if it is dead.
Looking at numerous nvidia defect forums and blogs, i feel this laptop has also failed because of it. BTW my laptop has 256MB NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) 8600M GT in it.

Since i bought this laptop in India and it is out of warranty, can anyone help me out. I need to know how to proceed to get my laptop fixed. I am presently staying in India.

Thanks in Advance
Anand

Hello Anand and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear that your laptop has failed.

Dell have actually admitted to the defect in your model of laptop and that can be found here:- http://nvidiasettlement.com/pdfs/NVF_NOT.pdf

I am not sure of the laws in your country so am unable to advise on that point.

However, as Dell have admitted to the defect in your laptop then this adds weight to your case.

I would therefore advise that you contact Dell and you should inform them that your laptop has failed due to the inherent defect in the Nvidia GPU.

They may try and fob you off and state that your laptop is out of warranty. You should tell them that the warranty is irrelevant as the defect was present at the time of purchase.

I would also advise you to seek some free legal advice to see what legal options are available to you.

I hope the above helps.

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes

Paul

Hi,
Thanks for your reply. Do the symptoms described to you above resemble the Nvidia defect. I also tried the "D" + power button test. Display shows Red, Green, Yellow screens and goes off again.
I spoke to Dell customer care, he was quite adamant that this is a motherboard issue. He is saying that my Laptop has some other video card (some intel card) which has failed. He said that he saw my laptop built up (shown below) and hence he came to that conclusion that it is not NVidia issue. I have asked him to give that in email and also asked for his supervisors email id.

I think that is a bit of a give away don't you?

I also took a look at the Wikipedia site for your laptop and found this:-

Quote:
XPS M1530
This 15.4-inch laptop, released on November 28, 2007, features the Santa Rosa platform. The XPS M1530 is almost identical in design to the XPS M1330 except that it has 3 different colors (blue, white and red) and it is a bit thicker and heavier with a 15.4-inch CCFL or LED screen.

It can be configured with Intel Core 2 Duo mobile processors up to T7800 (2.6 GHz)/T9500 (2.6 GHz, 6 MB L2 cache)), up to 4 GB DDR2 SDRAM at 667 MHz (Crucial.com indicates max. of 8GB at 800 MHz), up to 320 GB 5400 rpm hard drive/500 GB 5400 rpm or with faster 160 GB or 240 GB 7200 rpm and up to 320 GB 7200 rpm hard drive or an optional 128 GB solid-state drive, and can be configured with a 128MB DDR2 Geforce 8400GS or 256 MB DDR3 8600M GT GPU. Wireless draft-n is also available (802.11n).

The XPS M1530 includes a biometric fingerprint reader and a 2 MP webcam. Another option for this laptop is a glossy 1920x1200 display, even though it is 9 inches smaller than Dell's 24 inch monitor. The system weight starts at 2.62 kg (5.78 lbs) and is dependent upon configuration.

The laptop contains an internal slot for a Dell mobile broadband card.

XPS M1530 is no longer available for purchase on Dell's website as of early August 2009. Dell became aware that the problem was limited to Nvidia chip production, the BIOS was updated to A12 which improves thermal control but does not prevent it from reoccurring. The problem associated with Nvidia GPU's was the chip material used could not stand high temperatures.

That quite clearly states that the GPU in your laptop is Nvidia and also states that your laptop was removed from sale in August 2009.

The full Wikipedia entry can be found here:- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dell_XPS

I would get back onto Dell and would inform them of the above and would tell them that the earlier information they gave you with regard to the GPU in your laptop is incorrect.

What do you think?

Best wishes

Paul

Hi Paul,
Thanks for you reply. What the Dell support is actually trying to say is that my Laptop has two graphic cards and one of them has failed, not the NVIDIA one. Thatswhy i gave my Laptop configuration because i couldn't find out which the other card. He has still not emailed me or contacted me. Please let me know how to proceed further.
Thanks for your kind help
Anand

Hello Anand,

I cannot understand why they are stating that your laptop has two GPU's. It is clear from the specifications and from the reviews on the internet that your laptop has only one GPU.

I would now contact Dell again and would request that they escalate your complaint to management.

The important thing that you need to point out to Dell is the following:-

Quote:
XPS M1530 is no longer available for purchase on Dell's website as of early August 2009. Dell became aware that the problem was limited to Nvidia chip production, the BIOS was updated to A12 which improves thermal control but does not prevent it from reoccurring. The problem associated with Nvidia GPU's was the chip material used could not stand high temperatures.

That is a quote from the Wiki page on your model of laptop.

Your model was withdrawn from sale 11 months after you had purchased yours. If Dell withdrew your model of laptop from sale in August 2009 I wonder when, exactly, they realised that there was a problem? In my opinion this must have been some weeks or even months before August 2009 and would have placed the withdrawal from sale to be well within your warranty period.

This needs to be explained to Dell. Have you taken legal advice yet to see if you can sue Dell if they fail to capitulate?

Best wishes

Paul

Hi,
Customer service has still not responded to my email. Please find below my last correspondence email with their Service Team (email sent on 19th July):
Sunil,

I am still waiting for your email. Yesterday you had told me that this was not NVIDIA issue but some other video card on the motherboard. You said that you have seen this card on my Laptop configuration. Let me know which card you saw, I have attached my Laptop configuration with this email. Your resolution to this issue is that i should change the motherboard, let me know if i understand this correctly.
Also, I had requested for your supervisors email.
It would be better if you do not call me now, and we communicate through email so that our conversations can be documented.

Anand

So far no one has called me or emailed me. What should i do now. I don't want to keep calling him because i would like my conversations to be documented. Does anyone know any other email who i can contact with.

Thanks in advance

Anand

Hi Lapcure,

At the outset I would like to thank you and congratulate you and your team on covering this Nvidia issue in depth and helping people facing this issue across the globe, Good work congrats again.

I am Vishwanath from India, I too am facing same issue with my Dell XPS M 1530, which was purchased during September 2008 in India. My LCD displays violet vertical lines on black background when i start my laptop without displaying any bios or OS start u[p screen, but actually the computer loads up the OS and i can hear the windows start up sound.

I have done the D + Power diagnostic check which passed confirming my LCD is fine and the problem is with underlying defective NVIDIA 8600 graphic card.

I have already registered a complaint with Dell India through Dell technical support center and awaiting the response from them, In complaint i have clearly told them this problem is because of inherent defective Nvidia graphics card.

I would like to get your help and guidance in further handling of this issue, and take up the issue with Dell India in a proper way. Because I think there are very few people in India taking up this issue with Dell with a formal complaint.

Also please let me know the people who are facing similar issues in India who you have come across so that I can communicate and collaborate with them in getting the issue resolved.

Working together will help things move faster so I need all your and other people's ( facing same problem ) help and advice.

Looking forward for your guidance as soon as possible.

Thank You
Vishwanath

Hello Vishwanath and welcome to my forum.

Thank you for your very kind words in your post, it is much appreciated.

Firstly, the good news is that your laptop has been acknowledged by Dell as being inherently defective so you should not have too much of a problem in proving that point.

I am not sure off hand which claimants are resident in India but if you search the forum I am sure you will find them.

Dell are 100% responsible for the premature failure of your laptop due to the inherent defect so the best advice that I can give you is to seek some free legal advice in your country to see what options are available to you.

I am more than conversant with the Sale Of Goods Act here in the UK but I am unsure of the laws in your country so I am unable to advise you in that regard.

The best advice I can give you is to be persistent and to stand your ground in this matter.

No doubt Dell will try and refute your claim, as they have done in other cases, but persistence on your part will ensure that you reach a positive resolution.

I am sorry that I cannot give you more precise help with regard to your claim, due mainly to my lack of knowledge of the laws in your country, but if you are resolute in your claim then you will succeed.

If you have any questions then please let me know.

Please keep me updated on your progress.

Good luck and best wishes

Paul

Hi Lapcure,

I got call from Dell senior executive and he is insisting that the Nvidia graphics issue has to be resolved withing 1 year extension of warranty provided by Nvidia and can not be extended to my laptop which is 4 and half years old is not liable for free replacement. He is telling this in spite of me stating that the Nvidia graphics card had inherent defect. And when i stated that Dell should give warranty for inherent defective parts for 6 years, he is saying there is no such law.

Please help me with this clause of 6 years from date of purchase and tell me more about this or where i can find more about this clause and also is this applicable in India.

Looking forward for your positive response, Thank you.
