Hi, before I start please forgive my total lack of computer jargon. I have had the Acer 7720G with NVIDIA GeForce 8400m gs turbo cache laptop for about 3 - 4 years. I bought it from a friend who worked in a repair centre, so I have no real route back through the retailer. When I hit the start button all I get is a black screen and one of the green lights flickers. Reading the posts on here it appears I have the same problem with the card Y/N ?

The problem I have is I have no way of getting a refund or a replacement card from the retailer. So my question is.... where can I get a replacement card and what sort of price should I pay for one (I have seen a video on you tube on how to replace it and it looks easy enough to change). Once changed will I need to do anything other then switch it on ? thanks for your help on this one.

Hello Wilfredo and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear that your laptop has failed.

I am also sorry to hear that you have no legal recourse, I hate it when this kind of situation occurs but there is a glimmer of hope.

If you are handy with a screw driver then there is a quick and easy way to get the laptop working again.

Luckily the GPU in your laptop is located on a removable card rather than being bonded to the mainboard so this makes it nice and easy to work on.

Ordinarily one would use a proper rework tool on the GPU but it is unlikely that you will have one of these and so using only a screw driver and a hair dryer you will be able to get your laptop working again.

In order to do this please do the following:-

1) Firstly, remove the battery and AC Power.
2) Next, turn the laptop upside down and remove the screws from the large removable panel. Then remove the panel.
3) When you have done that you will see the heat sink assembly. Remove all the screws holding this in place and remove it.
4) You will then see the Nvidia PCI Express card. Remove the 2 screws holding this in place and remove the card.
5) Using a hair dryer on its hottest setting heat ONLY the Nvidia GPU for between sixty and ninety seconds.
6) Leave the card to fully cool.
7) If there is any thermal paste on the GPU then remove this and apply some fresh paste. Also remove the old paste from the CPU and reapply this.
8) Re-assemble your laptop and presto - it will work again.

How long it will work is indeterminable but if it fails again then simply repeat the above process.

I hope the above helps.

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes

Paul

Thanks for your help, I will give it a go. Nothing to lose.

I assume the paste I can get from a PC shop ? If this fails is there any other option other then scrapping the laptop ?
Many Thanks

Hello Wilfredo,

You will be able to get the paste from a PC Shop or from Ebay. Try and get some Arctic Silver as that is the best.

You will not have to scrap the laptop though. If using the hair dryer doesn't last long enough then I would be prepared to rework the card for you.

If you were to pay the cost of carriage both ways, which will come in at under £10, then I will do it for free for you.

I would not charge for this as I could not guarantee how long it would work for but I don't mind doing it if this helps.

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes

Paul

I have my laptop apart, not sure what the Nvidia PCI Express card looks like and what part of it I should be directing my hair drier at ?
Also not sure what the CPU looks like ?

Do you have any photos or can you be a bit more descriptive, sorry to be a pain but I am complete novice when it comes to this.

Thanks again

shaun

Hello Shaun,

Please would you take a photo of the inside of your laptop and post it here and I will be able to then direct you straight to the relevant part.

As soon as you do that I will advise further.

Best wishes

Paul,

Sorry to be a pain, I am having trouble uploading photo's from my ipod on to this site, can I e-mail them ?

Also I think I followed your instructions and when I turned it on, 1st time I had no change, 2nd time it started to show on the screen, but disappeared leaving multi-colour vertical lines on the screen before they disappeared
