hi all i bought the above laptop xmas 2007 from comet keys started falling off after six months and after 18 months it died.comet were no help !! out of warranty and told me to get an engineers report.did this and sent it to them stating nvidea chipset had blown the motherboard.comet then said their engineer must look at it at a cost of £50.i told them i already provided a report at their request which cost £60 by a qualified engineer.they then said it wasnt good enough.eventually after much arguments they said they would repair it but only pay 70% of the cost but would not state if this included labour.i gave up in the end and bought another laptop i even had a telephone conversation with a director who was no help.
i have just come across your site and wondered if you could help because i am so angry with comet and also i am a carer and cannot afford to lose the 400 + pounds the laptop cost (am still paying for the new one lol - any help greatly appreciated

Hello Grandadoakley and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear of the problems you have experienced with your laptop.

We can certainly help with your claim.

Please could you let me know exactly what it states in the engineers report that you have already obtained.

I know you have stated that the report states that the "Nvidia chipset had blown the motherboard", but does the report state what tests they carried out?

Your laptop contains an Nvidia 7000 GPU which whilst not as prolific as some of the other GPU's is still failing due to the defect.

Comet cannot charge you a penny for the repair or resolution so take absolutely no notice of them when they say that they will only pay 70% of the cost.

If you can let me know about the report I will then advise further.

Fear not, if your laptop is indeed inherently defective then we will help you reach a resolution.

Best wishes

Paul

Hello Adrian,

It would be best to now wait to see what Comet say and then decide on the next course of action.

If they accept the report then great. If not then you will probably have to obtain a second report.

Let's see what they say first and then decide.

Best wishes

hello again paul and thanks for the quick response
comet had the report approx 12 months ago but then said i had to have their engineer look at it at a cost of £50.i did what they said first and got my own report done and sent it to them but they then said i had to have theirs and pay for the priviledge.that is when i threatened them with court and spoke to a director in their head office.i was then told about the 70% but still had to pay for there report, that is as far as i got and gave up.
regards adrian

Hello Granndadoakley,

Hello Grandadoakley,

Sorry for the late reply but I overlooked your post.

It is wholly unacceptable if you have provided them with a report that states your laptop is inherently defective and yet they still want you to pay 70% towards the repair.

Plus they want you to pay for their report!

What planet are they living on if they think that is acceptable?

Have you sent Comet a letter before action yet?

If not then that is your next move. I would send them the following letter. Simply download this and edit it with your details:- download/letter-with-report.doc

You should then send the letter via recorded delivery to Comet at the following address:-

Comet
George House
George Street
Hull
North Humberside
HU1 3AU

The letter gives them seven days and is quite strict with regard to the timetable. The final line in the letter, the bit about time being of the essence, means that if it takes them ten days to respond to you and if in that time you have filed a small claims action then they would have to reimburse you for that.

I hope the above helps.

If you have any questions then please let me know.

Best wishes

Paul

Hello Adrian,

To be honest I think that Comet will reject the report on the grounds that there were no tests performed which proves the presence of the defect.

Whilst the report states that the Nvidia GPU is the likely cause of failure there is no evidence to corroborate this claim.

But before you get another report let them see the one you have and see if they accept it. If they do then great, If not then please let me know and I will advise further.

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes
