I've just joined this forum and am looking for any advice with regards to a problem I'm having with my hp dv2700. I purchased it in March 08 with a Nvidia GeForce 8400M GS. It worked fine up to a few months ago when i noticed the fan was running much more indicating a heat problem but everything else was fine. In the last few days the screen has begun to freeze up with a strange pattern against a blue background. I have to turn off and restart to get going again. Sometimes when I restart I get a black screen but can hear the windows start-up and can login using my finger swipe but no screen. After several tries the PC starts up okay. When I start up programs that use Java this seems to trigger the fault to re-occur. I'm not 100% sure about this but there seems to be a link. This last happened two hours ago and my PC has been running okay since but I've not used Java applications. So my basic question is given the fault as described has anyone else had this and is it related to the Nvidia issue?

Hello Scot and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear of the problems you are experiencing with your laptop.

First things first,, if you take a look at this link:- http://tinyurl.com/346sgvz you will see the BIOS update page for your laptop.

This particular BIOS update state:-

Quote:
Turns the system FAN on at the lowest speed, when the notebook is powered on.

This update, released on the 8th April 2008 was specifically released to prevent the laptop from overheating.

I note that you purchased your laptop in March 2008. Had HP told you at that point of the potential for the premature failure of your laptop then you would have been legally entitled to reject the laptop. I take it that you didn't receive any notification from HP with regard to this update?

I would say that your problems are unrelated to Java. It sounds like your laptop is on the fringes of failing but hasn't quite failed yet.

There are 2 utilities in the downloads section of this forum. One is called GPU-Z and is a temperature monitoring program and the other, Rthdribl, is a GPU stress tester.

The utilities are available here:- tools-to-test-to-see-if-your-nvidia-gpu-is-about-to-fail-t57.html

If you download those two utilities and then test your laptop at idle and under load. Once you have the test results then please pop back here and let me know the temperatures and I will advise further.

If you have any questions or if you need any advice then please let me know.

Good luck and best wishes

Paul

Thanks for your quick response Paul. I downloaded the BIOS but when it came to install, it compared it to my current version which is more up to date so I cancelled that. My BIOS temperature at idle ranges from 65 to 74. I tried to download the stress test software but got the message "d3dxp_35 dll missing" so I couldn't run that.

Hello Scot,

You should bear in mind that any current BIOS contains the changes in previous updates, so your current BIOS will contain the fan "tweak"

The reason that I mentioned the BIOS update in my previous post was because if your laptop is inherently defective then that is a bit of proof that HP are fully aware of an issue with your model of laptop.

At 74C that is a little too high for an Idle temperature. Would you please run a DVD disk with the temperature program in the foreground so we can determine the temps under load and then pop back here with the results and I will advise further.

Best wishes

Paul

Just a follow up on the temperature. Running my PC today when I turned it on cold it was 60c. With a few applications open it's operating around 65c. When I ran a video from my hard drive it got up to 89c with GPU load around 20%. Other than that my PC is running fine and started up first time.

Hello Scot,

I would say that your laptop is on the fringes of failure, but hasn't quite failed yet.

It would be difficult to prove the inherent defect based on temperatures alone as there could be a number of factors that can cause such temperatures.

I would continue to use the laptop until it finally fails at which point you would be able to commence your claim.

Any questions please let me know.

Good luck and best wishes

Paul
