hi,
got my claim approval letter says they are sending a box to "repair"
my Dell.

Am i understanding correct that people are mad because they understand the manufacturing politics dictates that the the only parts were made in the same time and same "run" that will never be repeated too expensive since innovation and newer generations of design rule the factory effort. And no competitor upgrade (parts) by other makers exist and there is no compatibility with other brands or generations of design so therefore, logic states there ARE NO GOOD PARTS and "repairs" are just BAMBOOZLES?
the only parts are the same ready-to-go-bad stuff and is just a
band aid fix that wont last.

am i off?

oh yeah plus useful life stuff.
only got a year out of it when new and 2 years in the closet
now another year but not its not the new current level technology i paid for ...got cheated out of the "current" part of the new
technology.. seems we are owed some upgrade to compensate for
loss of "new car smell".

Hello Delldude and welcome to our forum.

I have to agree with you when you say

It is quite true that a lot of retailers/manufacturers are repairing these laptops with parts that are as inherently defective as the parts they are replacing.

Add into the pot the problem with the solder and the fact that manufacturers have had to remove harmful substances such as lead and you have a recipe for disaster.

I have inspected laptops that have been recently repaired by Dell and which have subsequently failed again which confirms my claims that the defect exists in laptops that are "in the field" and also their spare pairts.

Did you ask Dell for the written guarantee?

If you have already agreed to proceed with the repair then fingers crossed your laptop doesn't fail again :x

Please let us know once you get your laptop back and I will advise on some tests you should run to see the temps the new board is reaching.

Good luck and best wishes

Paul

i guess so, when i completed the claim the 2 options were repair or refund. since i had paid for no repairs refund was not an option.

now i have recieved only a letter of claim approved for replacement of GPU,MCP or motherboard (as case may be).
says in the next week i will recieve a box to ship the unit.

am i too late to argue the remedy?

I dont think lawyers and lay people understand that there is no
good way to make repair.

thx Ralph.

also before i go a reading some more, is this entirely a heat issue?
perhaps heatsink issue?
i saw a site that described a "mod" where the guy felt a copper SHIM was in order to prevent improper fit of the heatsink..

from what i saw of the inside of the VOSTRO the copper heat tubes are closed at one end. i feel the urge to cut those open and connect them together with a tube of some sort. the cpu blower would induce SOME (better than ZERO) flow thru both heat tubes.
anyone taken this approach?

It is not just a heat issue .....

some mods have helped delay the inevitable breakdown..... but none to my knowledge solve it.

The BGA (?) grid is all so prone to problems after a change in solder types.

I dont know much about the legal stuff. Am i screwed since i did not purchase the machine?
Dell asked me to submit an ownership transfer as requirement
to open the support case.
It was given to me by an aquaintence who bought it like 3 years ago but shelf'ed it due to total failure after year.
She also provided me the email invoice.
I guess i'm locked in to the "repair" claim now so afterward will document any non-fix solution they try to sucker me
with and give everything back to her for a suit against Dell?
sound like i'm not getting a decent laptop form the deal so may as well.
We live in different parts of the country, would she be the one to sue, or would I do on behalf of (to the name of) she plus I ?
