Hello Mat,

Well it is great news that HP have admitted to the defect in your laptop so at least you are moving forward.

The repair though should only ever be accepted if the retailer is prepared to give the written guarantee that I advise.

In the absence of this I would reject the offer of a repair and press for a refund or replacement laptop.

HP have received millions of dollars in compensation from Nvidia for this defect so it is time for them to dip their hands into this pot.

What do you think?

Best wishes

Paul

Thanks Paul,

I emailed back and refused a repair. This morning I have received another email from Tina Fuller, stating that she "will investigate for a alternative solution and let you know as soon as possible."

Hopefully they will now offer a replacement or part-refund.

Mat

Hello again,

I have received an offer from Laptops Direct for the following 2 laptops:

A1 Toshiba Satellite C650-154 Black - Core i3-350M, 4GB, 320GB, 15.6", 3 Month Warranty.

Aspire 5552 # - AMD Athlon II X2 P320, 3GB, 250GB, 15.6" HD, 1 Year warranty.
(Webroot 2010 Home & Office Internet Security included).

I assume A1 means that the Toshiba is a refurb. I can't find this specific machine on their website, but a 2GB refurb version seems to be about £350.

The Aspire looks to be about £275 new. I doubt I would use the included software.

Do these seem like a fair offer to you Paul? I think the Toshiba looks like a better machine in every respect, apart from not being new. Do you think that would be an issue?

No mention of the cost of the report being included in these offers.

But it looks like this is about to reach a happy conclusion!! :D

Hello Mat,

Well, that is great news and it looks like your case it almost at an end.

The Toshiba is a great laptop and you should have no problems with it despite the fact it is an A1 refurb.

I would ensure though that they refund you the cost of the report as well.

It is looking good for you though. :!

Looking forward to your next update.

Best wishes

Paul

Hi Paul,

:! :! :! SUCCESS! :! :! :!

I replied to Tina stating that I would be happy to accept the Toshiba laptop if a refund for the engineer's report could be provided.

Tina replied this morning agreeing that it could, and the Toshiba laptop has been dispatched and is being delivered tomorrow! Tina advised that once received, she would be in touch to reimburse the cost of the report.

I would just like to say thank you Paul, for all of your help and support, and the time you have taken to reply to my posts. I'm really pleased to have a result from this, as I had almost written off my old laptop as being not worth repairing. It most likely would have sat in a cupboard for a few more years and I probably would have eventually thrown it away. If it wasn't for this site, and your efforts, I certainly wouldn't have thought of or known how to go about taking action.

So thanks again!

Regards,
Mat

Hello Mat,

Well done on your success. :! :! :! :!

I am so pleased that you didn't write your laptop off and that you pursued your claim.

It would have been easy to have just thrown the laptop away, or worse, to have paid for a repair.

I am glad that you found us and that we were able to help you.

Best wishes
