Hello, I bought my laptop from pc world in october 2007. The model number is presario f500. It is a compac/ HP. When I press the power button on, the blue light will come on for roughly 1 second and then will go off resulting in the laptop not coming on at all even tho it was fully charged the last time I used it and have tried charging it up again.

many thanks.
Joel

Hello Joel and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear that your laptop has failed.

The problem you describe could really be caused by a number of things not necessarily related to the Nvidia defect.

If you take a look at the P/N number on the white barcode label on the underside of the laptop and then see if it matches one of the following P/N's:-

Quote:
RZ326UA; RZ327UA; RZ329UA; RZ330UA; RZ335UA; RZ340UA; GF593UA; GF596UA; GF602UA; GF606UA; GF606UA#AVA; GD598AV; GL935UA; RS499AV; RS500AV

If your P/N matches one of the above then that means it has already been recognised as being inherently defective.

It could well be that the current fault you are experiencing is related to the defect, but it would be wrong of me to state that it definitely is without any further evidence.

Did the laptop get particularly hot prior to failure?

Please let me know about the P/N and I will advise further.

Best wishes

Paul

Dear Paul,
thanks for your reply to my message. My p/n is GH835EA#ABU.
With regards to the laptop getting hot, I believe that it may have got a little too hot but I cannot state this for certain.

Many thanks
Joel

Hello Joel,

I have some good news for you.

I did a quick check on the HP support site to see if I could find any further information on your model of laptop and found this:- http://tinyurl.com/22o5ldf

This is the BIOS update for your model of laptop. On the 14th December 2007 HP released a BIOS update for your model of laptop. The purpose of this update, according to the support site, is:-

Quote:
Updates the fan control algorithm of the system to reduce the likelihood of future system issues.

This means that HP MUST have been aware of the potential for your laptop to overheat from as early as December 2007 - otherwise why release an update that switches the fans on continuously to the detriment of the battery?

Furthermore this update was released only two months after you had purchased the laptop. Had they told you about this update then you would have been legally entitled to have rejected the laptop as you were still within the first six months of ownership.

I think that the above information leads me to believe that your laptop could indeed be inherently defective.

There is a step by step guide on this forum that will help you reach a positive resolution and that is here:- post13.html#p13

If you follow my advice in that guide then you will be successful.

If you have any questions or if you need any advice then please let me know.

Good luck and best wishes

Paul

Dear Paul,

Last week I received a response from PC World with a reply to the "letter before action" which asked me to phone them. When I phoned them they asked me to take the laptop into the local branch, which I did today. The technician asked me whether my laptop was a HP and when I confirmed this he stated that it has been a common problem and it was faulty. When he confirmed this with the Head office they offered me £166. I bought the laptop in October 2007 for £400 and it became faulty in December 2010. Would £166 be a fair offer in your opinion?

Many thanks

Joel

Hello Joel,

Their offer is roughly in line with what one would expect to receive after having the laptop for 38 months.

I would be inclined to accept their offer as you would not get much more by proceeding further, though you may want to try haggling them up a little. Even if you only get an extra £20 it is better in your pocket than theirs.

What do you think?

Best wishes

Paul

Hello Paul,

thanks for your reply. I will probably accept the offer as advised. I was not sure whether it could have been advantageous to proceed further, but as you believe it is an ideal offer I will accept their offer.

Best Wishes
