Speaking as a person who has very little undestanding of how computers work, other than switching them on and pressing buttons to make things happen on the screen, i fail to see why, if these reliable parts are available to repair our laptops, the companies that we bought our laptops from, not the manufacturers, are unable to get HP (in my case) to provide the information without having to go to all the trouble that we have to.

I know that in the end it all comes down to money in the pockets of the investors but for those of us who have taken the time to try and gain retribution rather than just "binning" our usless paperweights, why cant they just accept that they are in the wrong and pay up???????????

Model: Piles of dead Nvidias
Amount Paid: 0
Hi Lucas,

Finally someone who also knows what they're talking about. I replace a few dozen Nvidias each week. Of course I always use the updated versions to make sure they will last a few years. It really bugs me to see 99.9% of "repair shops" just reflow or reball the old junk chips :( 3 months if you are lucky......

Nvidia has been making good chips since about 0825, you will notice the batch numbers will end in R (01R, M0R, etc). I have a hell of a time finding G86-731, 771 and MCP67MV chips atm. You also have to watch out for the many fake/remarked chips that are coming from China now. Supply is good for G6100/6150, Go7400T, Go7600T, G86-631 and G84-603.
When using these chips I dare to warrant the boards for 1 year easily. Not had a single return yet with 500+ Nvidia repairs in the last 1.5 years. This also proves that there is not much wrong with the design of the heat pipe on HPs end. Chips are fine running at 100C as long as they are engineered right! Nvidia is to blame for using the wrong materials in their chips. I'm pretty sure Nvidia was aware of it as early as 2006. I have been seeing high failure rates in Nvidias since the 5000 series chips (2004). If chips fail within a year "in the field", you can make a chip fail in a few weeks under "lab/test" conditions. Nvidia 100% knew they were cranking out junk when they released the G8x series!!!

Some Ati chips actually suffer from the same issue, mainly replacing X600, X700, X1250 and X1600. Nowhere near the number of Nvidias though (95% Nvidia 5% ATi). They are quite easy to obtain thank god :)

Hello,

How many times do I have to say this?

Customers are happy to accept repairs as long as the retailer provides a written guarantee that the mainboard will be free from the defect and also that they provide the part number pre-repair so that this can be verified for ourselves.

Without this information why on earth should a customer, who purchased the laptop in good faith, have to accept a repair that could potentially fail again?

Well I certainly would not want a laptop reaching those temperatures sat on my lap or even on my desk.

At 100C this is equivalent to the boiling point of water and is, in my opinion, a danger to your health and safety.

So, by your own admission there are plenty of fake chips available which is an even greater reason for requesting the written guarantee and part number.

I beg to differ on that point. The design of some of these HP laptops is so appallingly bad at heat dissipation that they actually compound the issue.

There is, for example, no way to clean the heat sink or fans without the need to completely strip the laptop down. This is unacceptable as a can of compressed air does not always do the trick.

I am not sure of the purpose of this topic. Everyone knows that repairs to these laptops are unreliable and at the end of the day in the absence of any proof from the manufacturers or retailers that the repair will indeed be defect free then any offer of a repair is, in my opinion, worthless.

Both yourself and the OP seem to exhalt repairs to these laptops and judging by the tone of your posts seem to belittle those that disagree with you.

I am now locking this topic as I cannot see that it serves any purpose.

Best wishes
