Hi Paul

I received the following reply from Comet with regards to my defective HP laptop. Any advice would be appreciated.

"Further to my previous e-mail, I am now able to provide an update.

Having discussed the matter with our Computing Support Manager, I am able to offer a free of charge repair to the motherboard of your laptop as checks have shown that the replacement motherboard previously used, may have been affected by the Nvidia GPU defect, for which I apologise. Should this be agreeable for you, I would kindly request you notify me at your earliest convenience so that collection of your laptop may be arranged for this repair."

Thanks,

Jordan

Hello Jordan,

They don't say!

It is patently obvious that the board is affected with the defect so there is no "may have been" about it!

I would ask them for the written guarantee that the replacement board will now be free of the defect. You should tell them that considering this is the second time your laptop has failed due to the defect you do not want a re-occurrence of the problem and so the written guarantee is the least that they should offer.

If they refuse to give you a written guarantee then you should refuse their offer of a repair on the grounds that they have failed to provide sufficient evidence that the part that will be used will be free of the defect.

If they continue to refuse to do anything other than re-repair your laptop then you should sue them.

I hope the above helps.

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes

Paul

Hi Paul,

Comet have replied by email confirming that the laptop will be fitted with an upgraded motherboard from a company called Flextronics and will be free of the defect. I requested them to provide details of the board including its part number before accepting the re-repair as I noticed on the HP PartSurfer webpage that HP no longer support my laptop as of July 2011. I believe the only part listed on this webpage for my laptop is 461861-001.

I will let you know the exact details of the board they intend to use on Monday.

Thanks,

Jordan

Hi Paul,

Is there any way of knowing whether the new motherboard to be fitted in my laptop (HP part number 461861-001) is free from the defect?

Thanks

Jordan

Hello Jordan,

I have done a quick check on that part number and it appears to be an existing board rather than one that is newly revised and has been in circulation for quite some time.

A quick search on Ebay shows a number for sale that are faulty though there are no descriptions as to the nature of the reason for the faults.

They have stated that the board will be an "upgraded" board but I cannot see how that is possible with the part number that you have provided as this is just a standard pre-existing mainboard.

I would ask Comet to qualify what they mean by the term "upgraded mainboard" and would also ask them for the written guarantee.

Only then can you be sure that you will receive a board that will be free of the defect.

I hope the above helps.

Best wishes

Paul
