Morning, I am sending this message from my new Toshiba laptop! It was a great deal cheaper than the HP, so they have given me a Gift Voucher for the balance. They would not entertain anything involving cash, nor the warranty, since it had expired in Dec. 09. They also refused to refund my year old report saying M/B DOA, or the cost of postage to their HO with the letter before action/and requested info from them. I don't know if it is worth pursuing them for the warranty, but I'm happy to have the laptop replaced, at last, thanks to you and your advice! It seems they now accept that there has been problems with the HP machines and that it was an inherent problem, so maybe newcomers to the problem won't have the hastle that others have.
Regards
Isobel

Hello Isobel,

I would certainly pursue them for the refund of the warranty.

Like I said previously, you paid for a warranty on an inherently defective unit and therefore this should be refunded - whether they like it or not.

If they do not refund this amount then I would continue your action against them for the amount you paid for the warranty.

I hope this helps.

Well done on getting a new laptop though, i am really pleased for you.

Best wishes

Paul

Hi
Having just joined the site this is my first post.
My HP Pavilion dv 9000 laptop is 3yrs old and hence out of warranty. It has crashed giving the symptoms described by several members as being due to the nvidia chip. I started enquiries with comet as to what can be done and I have been given the runaround all day. Including at one point being told I would have to purchase a £15 telephone card before I could speak to an engineer.
As a result I am not happy to say the least. So I will be taking the advice from lapcure and go for the jugular!

Kris

Hello Kris and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear that your laptop has failed.

I cannot believe the amount of baloney that comes out of the mouths of the customer dis-service staff at Comet!

Take absolutely no notice of what they say as it is often utter rubbish and often has no basis in law.

How did you pay for the laptop? If you paid by credit card then you have extra protection.

Don't worry about the warranty status, you have six years from the date of purchase in which to take action against a retailer when the goods in question are inherently defective.

If you follow my advice in the step by step guide then you will be successful. That is available here:- post13.html#p13

Don't let them fob you off. Stand your ground, be persistent and, if your laptop is indeed inherently defective, then you really cannot lose.

Any questions please let me know.

Good luck and best wishes

Paul

I am hoping I haven't ruined my chances of getting something back from comet. I only found this forum after I had already done the damage. I bought a tx1000 in feb 2007 from comet and around Xmas last year the wireless card went down followed by the black screen of death. I couldnt find the receipt so just forgot about it and bought a new laptop to use instead. I dug it out yesterday and after seeing repair techniques online I stupidly attempted to take it apart. I unfortunately broke one of the little connectors for the monitor (the smaller white one if the two) at this point I decided to put it back together and forget the repair attempt. I then found this forum and also found the receipt! How badly does this affect my chances, could this have happened by accident ( the monitor had been repaired within the warranty period because it crackled when you turned the screen. I feel really stupid and annoyed with myself but please could you advise me.

Hello Thornton.jul and welcome to our forum.

Don't worry about the cable as this is easily put right.

The part number for the cable you have damaged is DD0TT8LC008 and these are available on Ebay for around £17. They can be found here:- http://tinyurl.com/2bph7vu

All you would need to do is to purchase one of these cables and then replace the damaged one.

You are then good to pursue your claim against Comet.

I hope the above helps.

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes

Hi

Thanks for your reply. It's the connection to the circuit board that's broken rather than the cable itself though.

Hello Thornton.jul,

How broken is broken?

What I mean is, has the connector broken away from the board or is it smashed?.

If it is smashed them I may be able to source one and replace the broken one.

If the connector has broken away entirely then I can simply resolder it back on.

Please let me know and I will advise further.

Best wishes

Paul
