Many thanks. I'll let you know when they have responded to my letter, and probably have to have another report done, so will contact you when necessary.

Morning,
Received a reply from Comet last Friday, pretty quick since I only posted it on Monday! They are asking for the serial number and product number in order to "move forward with this issue". The letter continues, "upon receipt of this information, I assure you of my prompt attention". I am asked to "please accept my sincere apologies for any inconvenience this matter may have caused".
I take this is standard procedure, if so what can I expect the next response to be?
Regards
Isobel

Hello Isobel,

Yes, that is a pretty standard reply.

Their next response will probably be something along the lines of "sorry but your laptop is not on HP's list of affected units".

We all know how wholly incomplete that list is anyway so there is no surprise there.

Fingers crossed for you and please let me know what their response is.

Best wishes

Paul

Hi,

An update on my case. I had taken my laptop (DV9574ea) into branch and had it sent off to the comet service center in Birkenhead. I received a phone call today and they have advised the follwing

1. The issue is a faulty motherboard and needs replacement
2. The failure is not related to an inherant fault
3. I should have registered with HP for my extra years warranty on that model, and claimed for the repair via the warranty

Based on my experience the fault is definately the GPU - If it was a 'motherboard' fault I would expect the PC to not boot at all, and not be triggered by running 3d stress tests. I did explain this, but the operative was non-technical and just kept repeating herself and going round in circles so I gave up

They quoted me £230 for a new motherboard in 20% discount that they give for repairs on this particular model.

I have asked for the laptop back with no repair and intend to get a 3rd party engineer report and use the template letter as per your recommendations.

Do you think sending the laptop to them will have harmed my case?
Do you think I will get my inspeciton charges (£45) back

Regards

Robin

Hello Robin,

Well, this is not the first time I have heard of customers taking their laptop into Comet for their "inspection" only to be told that the laptop had failed due to "major component failure" or for some other non-Nvidia related problem.

Once the laptops had been sent to me I soon found that they were indeed inherently defective due to the Nvidia GPU. Comet had no option but to refund the customers with the purchase price of the laptop.

You certainly will not have harmed your case in sending your laptop to them. In fact, you could have strengthened your case if it transpires that your laptop is indeed inherently defective as it would imply that Comet have either lied or mislead you with regard to the reason for its failure.

You should add the £45 that they charged you onto your claim if they do not give you this back.

If I can help you with an engineers report please let me know as we have had numerous successes against Comet.

Please keep us updated on your progress.

Good luck and best wishes

Paul

HI, just received phone call from Comet, they're offering me a replacement laptop without the need for a report! Is this a first? What's your advice? I have asked about refund for the extended warranty but that's a no go, surprise, surprise!
Regards
Isobel

Hello Isobel,

I would accept their offer on condition that they refund the £45 "inspection" fee that you have paid them.

If they are offering a replacement laptop then that means that they recognise that there is a problem with your laptop and so the "refundable" £45 that you paid should indeed be refunded.

How much did you pay for the exended warranty?

This should also be refunded or added on to your new laptop.

Please let me know how much you paid for the warranty and I will advise further.

Best wishes

Paul

Hi, I didn't have an engineers report, they haven't asked for one! I paid £249 for the warranty. What do you suggest I go for, don't know if another HP would be problem free.
Regards
Isobel

Hello Isobel,

Sorry, I thought you had paid them for an inspection.

I would certainly persue the £249 for the warranty as you paid this for an inerently defective laptop and it should be refunded.

I would tell them without the refund of the £249 that you needlessly spent you will have no option but to proceed to court.

If you would like me to suggest a laptop, then I would always go for Toshiba. I think that they are a more reliable laptop than some of the others that are currently available.

Good luck Isobel

Best wishes
