Hello Sue,

Do you still have the receipts for the inspection of the laptop?

If so, I would add that to your claim as a "consequential loss".

You won't be able to claim for the hard drive as it is unconnected to the defect.

Your next step is to contact John Lewis and tell them that your laptop is inherently defective.

They may try to fob you off by saying that you are out of warranty. You should tell them that the warranty status is irrelevant as you have six years to take action against a retailer when the goods in question are inherently defective.

They may then tell you to contact HP. You should tell that that your contract (sales contract) is with them and it is for them, John Lewis, to resolve the problems.

They may try to fob you off a little more but you should stand your ground and be firm.

You should tell them that you intend obtaining an engineers report and that you will supply them with a copy once you have it.

There is a step by step guide available that will help you reach a positive resolution and that is here:-
post13.html#p13

Persistence is the key to success.

If you have any questions of if you need any advice along the way then please let me know.

Good luck and best wishes

Paul

Hello Paul,

Thank you for your reply.

I can get a receipt for the inspection.
I must admit I am really wondering if it was the hardrive that actually needed changing!!

Anyway thank you so much for your time and advice which I will follow to the letter.
Fingers crossed and you never know maybe I will be lucky with my claim.

I will call JL tomorrow and start the ball rolling.

Kind regards
Sue

Hi Paul,

Here is the serial number for my laptop CN74278J3 could you check if this is in the faulty batch?

If it is not then is it still worth me claiming?

Many thanks
Sue

Hello Sue,

From your serial number I can tell tha your laptop was manufactured in week 42 of 2007.

This is slap bang when all the defective chips were being used.

Plus your model has already been proved, many times over, to contain a defective GPU.

So yes, it is worth claiming.

If your laptop is indeed inherently defective then you really cannot lose.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Good luck and best wishes

Paul

Hello Sue,

Well, it is possible as that laptop has an Nvidia 8200 GPU which is also failing in alarmingly high numbers.

I have worked on a number of the CQ60 models including the CQ60-218EM which has the same GPU as yours and were inherently defective.

If you download the two utilities from here:- tools-to-test-to-see-if-your-nvidia-gpu-is-about-to-fail-t57.html and then pop back and let me know the results I will advise further.

It doesn't look good though.

Best wishes

Paul

Good afternoon from an owner of a now dead TX2050ea from John Lewis. It appears that I have all the same issues with the NVidia chip. Could someone tell me how to confirm or prove it has a defective chip based on the serial number? I am ready to do battle with John Lewis and have checked out sections of thi very informative forum! My serial number is CNF8062FLP... Any initial advice would be very welcome. Thanks Greg

Hello Greg and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear of the problems you are experiencing with your laptop.

Well, your laptop has an Nvidia 6150 GPU as is certainly one of the affected chips.

Your full specifications can be found here:- http://tinyurl.com/37xdlnf

Your serial number tells me that your laptop was manufactured in China in week 6 of 2008. This was slap bang when all the defective GPU's were being used.

If you look at my signature at the foot of this post you will see a link to a step by step guide. If you follow my advice in that then you will reach a positive resolution.

If you have any questions then please let me know.

Please keep us updated on your progress.

Good luck and best wishes

Paul
