Hi Paul

Like make others, I am at the early stages with Comet regarding what my engineers says appears to be Nvidia defect (loss or wireless, black screen, beeping and overheating).

Wrote to Comet HO who called me today to say I need to get HP to confirm my laptop in on there list of defective products. I did and they said it wasn't and even if it was there extended warranty repair programme expired in May 2010 and that I had to speak to HP or Comet about a repair (to be paid for).

I have found a link on this site listing HP affected models http://www.nvidiasettlement.com/affectedmodels.html and mine is not listed. Is there a more recent list that this one and if my product number isn't on this list is that the end of the road?

I am not sure where to go next.

Many thanks

Hello Statters and welcome to our forum.

The fact that HP admit or deny that your laptop is on one of their lists is irrelevant.

If your laptop is inherently defective then it does not matter whether HP have already recognised this fact or not

You should get in touch with Comet and tell them that you purchased from Comet and not from HP so it is entirely Comets responsibility to resolve the situation.

No retailer should ever tell you to contact the manufacturer as it is never the manufacturers responsibility.

There is a step by step guide on this forum that will help you reach a positive resolution and that is here:- post13.html#p13

If you follow my advice in that guide then you will be successful.

If you have any questions then please let me know,

Best wishes

Paul

Hi, thanks for your response.

I think I am already at step 3.

I have written directly to Comet Head Office, they said they can't do anything unless HP confirm it is on their list of defective products. Otherwise it is a charged repair.

I have been in to a store and they have said the same.

HP have said it is not covered on the list (as expected) and I have seen other lists (PDFs) from their site so this appears to be true.

As they haven't inspected it and it's not listed anywhere, how can I be sure it has an inherent defect - I have an IT person looking at it (which how I came across your site) but what does he need to include in a report to prove the Nvidia defect is the problem? I can understand that Comet aren't just going to take my word for it.

Many thanks

Hello Statters,

Take absolutely no notice of what they have told you.

Whether or not your laptop is on a list is irrelevant.

If your laptop is proved to be inherently defective then you really cannot lose.

Regarding the report, the IT person will need to perform a series of tests to accurately confirm that the defect is indeed related to the Nvidia GPU.

I have to say that the report cannot be produced by someone who just works as an IT guy for a company but has to come from a computer shop or repair company.

I hope this helps.

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes
