Hello Pam and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear of the problems you have been experiencing with your laptop.

The problems you describe sounds like the Nvidia defect, though only an inspection of the mainboard could determine this for sure.

I have a few questions to see if I can help.

1) From whom did you purchase the laptop?
2) How did you pay (Cash/Credit card etc)?
3) Do you live in the UK?

Please let me know the above and I will see if I can help.

Best wishes

Paul

Hello Pam,

Excellent news that you paid by credit card as the card company are as liable as the retailer.

You should contact John Lewis and tell them that your laptop is inherently defective due to the Nvidia GPU.

They may tell you that you are out of warranty. You should tell them that you have six years from the date of purchase to take action against a retailer.

They may then tell you to contact HP. You should tell them that they alone are responsible for resolving the problem as they are the ones from whom you purchased your laptop.

Don't let them fob you off Pam, you have clear rights and they have to comply.

They may ask you to provide an engineers report.

We can help with that and have had numerous successes against most of the high street retailers.

The cost of the engineers report is £65 which includes the collect and return carriage via DHL.

You can claim this cost back from the retailer when requesting your refund/replacement as a direct consequential loss.

Turnaround time for these reports is 5 business days.

In order to proceed with the engineers report please do the following.

1) Please go to http://www.lapcure.co.uk/register.php

Complete the registration page and then verify your email address.

2) Once you have done that please then login to the site and click on the "Add a job" link.

Fill in details about your laptop and then once you are sure the details are correct please save the record.

Once you have done that the courier will be booked to collect the laptop the next business day.

We use DHL for the collect and return carriage.

Please ensure that laptop is securely boxed with sufficient packaging to withstand transit to ourselves.

Once you have booked your laptop in I will email you with the label to place on the box.

Payment is not due until the report is ready.

I will email you a PDF copy of the report and will include 3 copies of the report and invoice with your laptop.

You will be updated regularly as to the progress of your laptop through our system.

Once you have received the laptop and reports back you should send the retailer a copy along with a letter before action.

A template is available here:- letter-wth-report.pdf

You should download that, edit it with your details and sent it along with a copy of the report to the retailers head office.

Please ensure that you send it by recorded delivery and keep a copy of the letter, report (we send you three copies) and the postal receipt.

If, after seven days they have failed to comply then you should pop on over to www.moneyclaim.gov.uk and issue a small claims action against them.

If your laptop is indeed inherently defective then you really cannot lose.

If you have any questions or queries then please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please keep us updated on your progress.

Best wishes

Paul

Hello Pam,

This is not good news.

Quote:

Does this mean they are simply going to rework a new chip onto your old board?

The term "they renewed the solder on the new board" bothers me as it is a common mistake for people to think that the problem lies with the solder that bonds the chip to the mainboard.

It is not! The problem lies with the bond between the die (the little square bit in the centre of the chip) and the substrate (the green board that the chip sits on).

A full explanation of the defect is fully explained here:- post3.html#p3

I would want to know from John Lewis exactly what they are doing to repair your laptop.

Are they:-

A) Supplying a new board that is 100% free from the defect (you want this in writing)
B) Repairing your old board (you definitely do not want this)
C) Supplying you with an old board that had been repaired (again, you definitely do not want this)

You should ascertain this before they proceed with the repair.

If you are not happy you can tell them to stop as you want an alternative resolution.

As I have stated many times before, there are no reliable parts available at this time.

Lord knows what they are going to use in your laptop judging by the statement they made.

Good luck and please keep us updated.

Best wishes

Paul

Hello Pam,

Well, the inverter board is a little circuit board that provides high voltage for the CCFL tube that is in your LCD panel.

This tube is similar to a strip light and is what provides the brightness in your laptop.

If this board fails then you would experience a loss of brightness to your LCD panel. You would still be able to see the image if you looked closely at the screen though to all intents and purposes it would look black, in much the same way as the Nvidia defect manifests itself.

Were you experiencing problems with your hard drive? I wonder why they replaced that?

At least your situation is now resolved so that is a result for you.

I hope you now enjoy trouble free use of you laptop.

Good luck and best wishes

Paul
