Hi,

I was just this morning searching the web for a possible replacement motherboard for my laptop; and stumbled upon this interesting site!
I've had a few issues with my pavillion since I got it, and now that I have read through this site, it has become clear what the underlying cause couldve been. Anyway just last month the laptop graphics decided to give in, and so I just assumed that it was out of warranty and for the rubbish bin. I had to (under a strict budget) purchase a new pc which was a barebones pc, that needed parts so I borrowed them from my laptop (hdd, 1 module of ram and the optical drive).
I'm just wondering if I might be able to still go about getting some refund? I live in Ireland and paid a rather overpriced €1399 for my laptop from the above store.
I can certainly place everything back in if needs be.

I was getting the multiple "mini" screen display on the laptop, but noticed all the other components were fine, so just assumed the motherboard was frazzled.

I look forward to hearing from you, thanks for this site btw!

Hello Lastmcg and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear that your laptop has failed.

Your laptop contains the Nvidia 8400 GPU which is one of the more prolific of the defective GPU's.

The problem you describe is a manifestation of the defect so I would say that it is highly likely that your laptop is indeed inherently defective.

I did a quick check on the HP support site to see if I could find any information relating to your model of laptop and found this:- http://tinyurl.com/346sgvz

This is the BIOS update for your laptop which was released on the 8th April 2008. The purpose of this update, according to HP, is :-

Quote:
Turns the system FAN on at the lowest speed, when the notebook is powered on.

So, as early as the 8th April 2008 HP were aware for the potential for your laptop to overheat - otherwise why release a BIOS update that switches the fans on 24/7 to the detriment of the battery?

I note from your date of purchase that the BIOS update was released BEFORE you purchased the laptop.

Why did HP allow the continued sale of a product that they really should have known suffered from overheating?

This will be excellent corroborating evidence if and when you file your claim.

Who did you purchase from and what method of payment did you use (cash/cheque/debit card/credit card)?

There is a step by step guide on this forum that will help you reach a positive resolution and that is here:- post13.html#p13

If you follow my advice in that guide then you will be successful.

If you have any questions or if you need any advice then please let me know.

Best wishes

Hi Thanks for the response, I purchased it via the finance option due to the high price involved!
and I purchased it in PC World.

Hello Lastmcg,

Excellent news that you paid for the laptop on finance as this means that you are covered by the Consumer Credit Act and so can make a Section 75 refund claim if PC World refuse to comply with their obligations.

In situations such as this the finance company become jointly and severally liable with the retailer and so you can seek a resolution from one or the other (but unfortunately not from both).

See what PC World say when you make contact with them and then pop back here and let me know and I will advise further.

You claim has suddenly become that much stronger.

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes
