Hello,

My daughter has a HP lap top (not sure of model number) which has stopped working. I have taken it to my local tech who tells me that it is suffering from an Nvidia defective chip?

He has sugested looking at this web site to seek advise towards trying to get a refund.

We bought it from Comet on line November 2006 aproximatly £400, however we now have no reciept!

What if any advise can you give?

Thanks in advance.

Mike

Hello Mike and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear about the failure of your daughters laptop.

The receipt is not important as all you have to be able to do is prove purchase.

How did you pay for the laptop? If you paid by credit or debit card then you can prove purchase by showing the transaction on your statement.

If you paid by cash then it is a little tricky but not insurmountable.

If you can also let me know the P/N from the white barcode label on the underside of your laptop I will see if I can find out any further information for you.

If you have any questions or if you need any advice then please let me know.

Best wishes

Paul

Hi Paul,

Thanks for you're reply.

I have contacted Simon at Microtec Services (Wakefield) who says hello,Simon gave me you're link & is holding the laptop for me he has given me the following info

Series:- HP G6000

Service Tag:- G6031EA

Part No:- GZ976EA#ABU

I did pay for it by credit card & have spoken to my credit card provider to send me copy statements from the time I think I bought it? They have not arrived yet.

Thanks again & look forward to hearing from you with further advise.

Mike

Hello Mike,

Thank you for the additional information.

I have checked to see if there has been a BIOS update for your laptop that switches the fans on 24/7 but HP haven't released one for yours.

This does not mean to say that your laptop is not inherently defective, just it hasn't had the BIOS tweaked.

It is excellent news that you paid by credit card as this means you have extra protection should PC World fail to comply.

Have you spoken to Comet yet? If so what have they said?

To be honest, in my opinion Comet is one of the worse of the high street retailers for the way they are handling this situation. Their customer services department is highly unprofessional and they do seem to throw down obstacles to try and fob claimants off.

Persistence is the key to success and if you do persist then you will reach a positive resolution.

There is a step by step guide on this forum that will help you receive either a refund or replacement laptop and that is here:- post13.html#p13

If you have any questions or if you need any advice then please let me know.

by the way, your laptop is in safe hand at Microtech, I have dealt with them for years and they are a great set of lads there.

Best wishes

Hello Paul,

I have had the report compleated by yourself which I have sent off the Coment.

Comet have phoned me today saying that they will pay for the report & except that this laptop has the defective chip. They want to offer a free of charge repair with a new chip from Hp defective free & provide a 3 month warranty they say that they can not tell me the chip number at this stage before fitting it.

This is there only & final offer!

What do you think?

Thanks in advance.

Mike

Why on earth should you accept this type of a repair?

Accepting a repair where the mainboard will be replaced in its entirety is one thing, but this type of a repair is wholly unacceptable.

Considering that they will not give the part number of the chip and that they are only offering a three months warranty on the repair I would say that this is far from reasonable.

In the absence if the written guarantee and part number I would resoundly reject their offer

At the end of the day all you wanted was a laptop that was durable, free from defect and fit for purpose. What you got was a lemon.

Have you seen this post regarding a recent offer by Comet:- post9134.html#p9134

That is what they will tell you but that is not how things will eventually pan out. If they don't comply then sue them. Their offer is, in my opinion, wholly unreasonable.

Good luck and best wishes

Hi Paul,

I phoned Comet customer services last Wednesday the 8th December & instructed them that I reject the offer to repair my daughters laptop giving the reasons as listed on posting :- post9134.html#p9134 & again instructed them that I requested a full refund (which I would accept in Comet vouchers) or a replacement laptop I have had no further communication from them.
Can you give me advise on the process of moving things forward with putting a request to the small claims courts & the process.

Thanking you in advance.

Mike
