Hi,

I thought I would add my voice to the weight of this forum.

And give praise to the good work being done here.

Basically I bought my laptop direct from HP, a few years ago now, and it failed this year in march.

Every time I try to fire it up there's a few beeps omitted and the screen is just blank.

I phoned HP's help line, the guy on the other end tried to sell me one of their £15 technical consultancy sessions to which I responded "what's the point if I cant even see anything on the screen".

He conceded there was little point in me going down that route and then had the audacity to ask me if I'd like to buy a new machine instead? I obviously said no and asked how I got a repair.

After finding out the cost of their standard repair I thought about going to a local technician.

Luckily before I did I came across this site.

Anyway since then I've phoned HP to put the defect case to them, got transferred all over the place before finally given the number for their 'Exceptions Team' : 020 7660 0906.

There I was told to write in to HP complaints: PO Box 9226, Ashby-De-La-Zouch, LE65 9BW.

I used the before action template given on here and you can probably guess I've heard nothing back so will be proceeding with an engineers report.

Fingers crossed the guys at Lapcure can confirm the defect.

Hello Ian and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear of the problems you have been experiencing with your laptop.

You said the laptop gave off a series of beeps. Is it one long and 2 short? If so then this points directly to the GPU.

HP's customer service is abysmally bad so it is no surprise you have not heard back from them.

You will probably find you will also have to issue a small claims action against them in order to force them to face their responsibilities.

I will email you shortly with collection instructions.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Best wishes

Paul

Hi Paul,

After writing to HP it took a number of phone calls to actually get my assigned agent from the Exceptions team to track down mt letters in their mail room!!!

I can't believe even though they give you a reference number you send it to the right address and get proof of delivery they can't even manage to get your letters to the right people!

Anyway they told me they are not willing to give me a refund and small claims court is my only action.

I've since filed my claim at HMCS and have received Notice of issue.

Since then I have received HP's defense from Shoosmiths, it seems to contain standard stuff as i've seen exactly the same points on Annie's post "HP Store".

I now have the task of filling in the allocation questionnaire and wondered if you had any tips/guidance for filling it in please?

Most of it seems straight forward but i'm wondering what to put in the "Further Information" section and whether anybody used the "free small claims mediation service".

As always your help and guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Ian.

How bad is that? First they sold you a laptop that was doomed to fail prematurely then they say "so sue us"

No wonder they were recently quoted as "acting like Del Boy"

There is a guide on this forum that will help you complete the allocation questionnaire and that is here:-
step-by-step-guide-completing-the-allocation-questionnaire-t448.html

Some members have used the free mediation service and that has worked for them whilst for others it was a waste of time. I would recommend accepting mediation just to show that you are trying to be reasonable.

At one time I did recommend that members turned down offers of mediation as I felt that the retailer had already had enough opportunity to mediate. As some members have since had success with mediation I would say that it cannot hurt to give it a try.

I hope the above helps.

Any questions please let me know.

Good luck and best wishes

Paul

Well what can I say?

After all the delaying, going back and forth between departments and constant referral to this forum I have finally got a result.

I have received a letter from the solicitors offering me a refund of £719.60 (which includes my claim fee).

I was initially offered an alternative machine with a Radeon GPU but after I said I never wanted to own another HP product ever again the cash offer came through.

So from initially phoning their poor excuse for a help desk on 3rd March 2010 virtually 8 months later I’ve got the result I wanted.

Well, I still have to receive the cheque and return them the unit but I’m optimistic it will happen.

Once again I’d like to say thank you Paul for all your help and guidance in the matter and keep up the good work.

I’ll make sure I add another post when the money has cleared in my account.

Thanks again.

Ian.

Hello Ian,

Well done on your success :! :! :! :!

I am really pleased for you that you managed to reach this positive resolution without having to actually fo to court. It was quite evident that HP were never going to defend your claim as their position was indefensible so it looks like they let it go this far in order to see if you were serious about taking action or not.

It matters not now as you have received the refund you deserve.
