I wonder if you can tell me if you think my laptop - aka heap of rubbish - has the Nvidia Defect?

I bought my G6000 direct from HP on the internet (UK) in June 2008, everything was fine (except for the lack of battery life and it getting very hot) until November/December 2008 when the screen would keep going black (I could just about make out the desktop underneath the 'black' if held in the right way). HP repaired this under warranty and everything was ok again until about summer 2009, when the problem happened again. After a LOT of hassle I managed to get HP to repair it again under an extended warranty. I told them I knew the issue would happen again & asked for a new laptop, but this fell on deaf ears.

Then a few months ago it went again. Without the warranty HP will do nothing; they are the worst company I have ever had to deal with. The only way to see the screen is to have the laptop open as far as it will go, otherwise it either goes black or the picture just totally breaks up. I got in touch with Consumer Direct (a Government body to help consumers) who told me after three times of it doing this, this was clearly a Manufacturers fault and the under the Sale of Goods Act 1979, a product should last six years. I wrote a couple of letters and when HP finally responded by telephone they said they would do nothing.

So I've filed a claim at the Small Claims Court against them. I was Googleing the laptop to see if anyone else had had similar problems when I came across this forum.

So you think my laptop has the Nvidia Defect?

Thanks a lot

Beboi

Hello Beboi and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear of the problems you have been experiencing with your laptop.

To be honest it doesn't sound like the Nvidia defect.

The reason I say that is because you said:-

Quote:
I could just about make out the desktop underneath the 'black' if held in the right way

This sounds like it could be one of three things. Either:-

1) The Inverter
2) The tube in the LCD panel
3) The lid close switch

If you plug an external monitor into the laptop does it display ok?

You also said:-

Quote:
The only way to see the screen is to have the laptop open as far as it will go, otherwise it either goes black or the picture just totally breaks up.

This could be caused by the tube or the panel, without seeing actually looking at the laptop it is difficult to say definitively, but it doesn't sound like it is the Nvidia defect.

If you can let me know the full model number of your laptop from the barcode sticker on the underside of the laptop and also the serial number I will be able to advise you further.

Best wishes

Paul

Thanks a lot Paul, I wasn't sure or not but I'm still going to take them to court, they are so awful.

The serial number is CNF80634M8.
I can't find the full model number, I have the Product Key if that would help?

Hello Beboi,

Ok, from the serial number we can see that your laptop was assembled in China in week 6 of 2008.

This was bang when all the defective GPU's were being used. If your GPU hasn't failed yet, then it probably soon will.

If you let me know the P/N from the underside of the laptop then I will be able to find out more information.

Best wishes

Hello beboi,

That P/N is not valid as there is a character missing.

It should be 6 characters followed be EA#ABU like this:-

??????EA#ABU

If you let me know I will advise further.

I have deleted your last post as you put your COA key
by mistake.

Best wishes

Hello Beboi,

Your laptop has an Nvidia 7000 GPU which is one of the many defective units.

Full details of your laptop can be found here:- http://tinyurl.com/394lum7

This still does not prove whether or not your laptop is defective, just that your laptop has a GPU that is one of those inflicted with the defect.

I hope this helps.

Best wishes

Paul, that is all very helpful. Either way, my laptop is not fit for purpose and HP are breaking the law by not honouring the sale of goods act. I will use this information to help me in the small claims court. It may be a while, but when I have the result I will let you know how it goes. Thank you so much for everything.
