Just a quick update:

On Friday Comet sent me a link to the HP Limited Warranty Service Enhancement (as if I hadn't found it already myself). According to then, this "proves" that my laptop doesn't have the Nvidia defect.

In that case I'd better give up & leave them alone - NOT

They said the same to me too and then changed their minds, "read my comet discussion thread", but it still isnt on the official hp list.
I wouldnt take any notice of anything they say, get yourself the engineers report and sue them.

Following the Limited Service Enhancement announcement on F500 laptops I decided to contact HP directly (I don't want to let Comet off the hook but thought I'd see if I could get HP to do anything).

I've received this from them today:



It's interesting that they clearly didn't have a cut & paste reply to my query and, whilst it may just be a poor Indian to English translation, they seem to be admitting the fault on my laptop.

I've sent them the further info they requested & will see what happens next. Obviously, if they do offer me a repair, I'll need to stress out the GPU as much as possible when I get it back!

I think the trick is, if they do try to force a repair on you is to ask for confirmation, in writing, that the laptop is 100% free from the Nvidia defect. I would make that the overriding factor on you accepting the repair.

Something along the lines of:-

I am accepting a repair to my laptop by way of a replacement motherboard on the basis that the replacement motherboard is 100% free from the Nvidia defect.

Should it transpire at some point in the future that the replacement board is inherently defective or has problems with the Nvidia GPU then I will require a refund of the purchase price of the laptop.

Will they give you this undertaking? In my opinion I doubt it!

If they are not prepared to give you this assurance then why should you accept such a repair when that repair could be doomed to failure.

Should you decide to accept the repair and it does fail again, say in 8 months time, then you would be worse off than you would be if you had insisted on a refund in the first place.

You may ask why. Well, if you accept a repair once, then you have to let the retailer repair again and you loose the right to a refund.

I say no undertaking then no repair thank you very much.

I'm having the exact same problems with an HP G6062EA.

I've contacted HP since I don't have the receipt for the laptop (bought from Tesco in June 2008)

They suggested the usual troubleshooting and if that failed to call a number for a repair, which I did. They quoted £261.92 for a collection and repair. I think not, the laptop cost about £300.

I've written back to HP to say I am not satisfied, if they don't budge where can I go from here?

I would get back to tesco with that one, i remember reading somewhere that a physical receipt was not a compulsory part of any purchase, i will check that one out.
They will know you purchased it from them somehow, by means of a clubcard or a witness you had with you the day you purchased it, remember !

Hello Pkaulf and welcome to our forum.

Do you remember how you paid for the laptop?

Was it cash or credit card?

Also, do remember the precise day that you purchased?

If you paid by debit/credit card then great as you will have a paper trail in which to be able to track the transaction.

If you paid by cash and you remember the date you purchased then you can ask Tesco's to search the transactions for that day to find it.

But to be honest, it would be great if you paid by debit/credit card.

I do not think that pursuing HP will get you a resolution as you do not have a contract with them, only with Tesco.

Hairy is spot on here - I think I saw it on a Trading Standards web site.

Basically, it's not compulsory for a company to give you a receipt so they cannot insist on you showing one - a credit card statement will be fine to show proof of purchase to a court (if you ever have to go that far).

At the end of the day Tescos are who your contract is with - I only started going after HP in an attempt to get them to admit that the G6000 range is also affected. I doubt they ever will but it's worth a try.

After reading of Hairy's success today I'm even more determined to take my claim all of the way. It's also nice to know that I'm not the only person with a G6000 series laptop having this problem.

I have the same model as you, bought from tesco in April 2008.

This morning it would not turn on... so i hot footed it down to The Tech Guys to see if they could help me out, they advised that it was the Nvidia motherboard problem and that the best course of action was to pursue the issue with Tesco for the reason that as a "known fault" existed that the normal warranty need not apply in this situation and that there is something in consumer rights to say that a laptop should work for 6 years and anything under that would then be owed compared to the original price....

I am about to take my first steps in getting some sort of resolution to this... As we seem to have the exact same problem- I wonder how it went with Tesco?

Any advice would be great... from anyone....?
