Model: G6000

Purchased in May 2008 - Failed in November 2010 HP G6000 from staples.
Thanks to this website a have a £250 pound refund/vouchers.

Reported fault to helpful staff (Isle of Wight Branch)...They were not surprised and say they have had few come back!

Suggested to have a reputable engineer write a report.

Submitted report and handed failed laptop to staples. Took a few days for them to gain approval from HP (with daily chase up calls). (overall took less than a week!).

Now sat with SAMSUNG notebook thanks again to this website!!

Hello Pokey,

Well done on your success :! :! :! :!

I have said it before but Staples really are one of the better of the high street retailers.

The way they handle their customers who have purchased a defective laptop is exemplary and some of the other retailer, who shall remain nameless, should take a leaf out of their book.

Well done again and I am glad we could have helped you reach this positive resolution.

Best wishes

hi guys :)

well i've been looking at some other peoples problems with the graphic chip and all the symptoms sound similar to mine. blank screen, wireless going, turning on for 3 secs then switching off etc.

so i called staples and they said they can refund me £175.00 for the laptop and pay for the report if it is the graphic chip which is faulty. However; my laptop cost £400.00 and only lasted 2 years, should i except the £175.00 or demand the full amount?

cheers :)

Hello Steffistef and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear that your laptop has failed.

Looking at your profile I note that the laptop failed in June of 2009. Did you report the failure to Staples at this time or have you only recently notified them?

The problem is, the retailer will only accept the date of failure as being the date that you reported the failure to them.

If you can evidence that you reported the problem earlier then the amount you would receive would be higher.

If you could let me know exactly how much you paid, the date of purchase and the date that you reported the failure then I will calculate how much they should offer you.

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes

hi paul :)

well i purchased the laptop on 14th dec 2007 and the laptop cost £399.99 i reported the problem on the 4th april.

the manager of the store said i can only recieve £175.00 because it was reported late or something like that. Have i ruined my chances of getting the full price because i reported it late or could i lie say i reported it earlier??? :(

Hello Steffistef,

Unfortunately the retailer will only take the date of failure as being the date that you reported it.

Whilst I can appreciate that this may seem unfair, it is the only way to do it because otherwise it could be open to abuse from customers reporting an incorrect date of failure. Not that I am saying you are doing this, but it also has to be fair to the retailer as well.

So based on the information you supplied their offer is in line with what you would expect to receive.

If they let you keep the laptop, which they have for others, then that would fetch in the region of £100 in its current condition on Ebay which will further enhance your refund.

I am sorry that your refund has been diminished somewhat. You were not to know that you were in a position to make a claim when the laptop first failed. Like most people you though that because the warranty had expired then there was nothing that you could do. Had you known about the defect at that time then the refund would have been greatly enhanced. You could always argue that point to see if you can squeeze a little more out of them, though to be honest, anything over and above the £175 that they have already offered would be as a gesture of goodwill on their part.

If they refuse to increase their offer then I would be inclined to accept it as it is unlikely that you would receive more by proceeding to litigation.

I hope the above helps.

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes

my laptop failed around june and i took it to an repair shop a month later ( july 2009) and they also said it was the chip, i still have the form they gave me telling me its the chip. if i give that to the staples store and tell them i looked into the issue beforehand and was unaware of the problem being widespread do you think they may bump up the price?

Hello Steffistef,

Well, that report would certainly provide evidence that your laptop had failed as early as June 2009 and so could add some weight to your claim.

It is always worth sending them a copy and asking that they re-evaluate their offer in light of the extra evidence.

Like I said previously they may increase their offer but this would only be a gesture of goodwill.

I have to say that I have always praised Staples for the way they handle matters.

Whilst I may seem to always berate the retailers I feel that on the whole this is generally justified. Staples are a different kettle of fish and are one of the better of the high street retailers and so they may just increase their offer to you.

Please could you let me know the P/N number which is printed on the white barcode label on the underside of the laptop and I will see if I can find any further information to further enhance your claim.

Best wishes

Hello Steffistef,

I have checked to see if you model of laptop had the BIOS update that switched the fans on continuously but it hasn't.

This does not mean to say that your laptop is not inherently defective, just that there wasn't a BIOS update.

So, I would contact Staples and would do what I advised in my previous post and see what they say.

If they do increase their offer then great. If not then at least their offer is better than an expensive door stop.

Good luck with the next step.

Best wishes
