Hi Paul,

I have now received a letter from comet stating that HP have advised that the replacement board is free of defects and that if at any time after the repair it transpires that the mainboard is inherently defective they will then refund or replace the laptop.

Due to the the fact that the repair they are offering has the BIOS update do you think it is unreasonable for me to refuse the repair because of this, as I dont believe they are actually solving the original problem. It sounds to me like they are biding their time and hoping for the best.

thanks,

Hello Gazt,

If the repair they are offering has the BIOS update then I would reject their offer of a repair.

Who wants a laptop that has the fans on 24/7 and that depletes the battery life?

This, in my opinion, is not a fix but a workaround and is just not good enough.

I would firmly reject their offer and would tell them that either they offer you a refund or repair now or they will pay you later at court.

Did you mention to Comet about the information we had found out about the part that was being supplied? If so what did they say?

Don't let them fob you off Gaz stick to your guns and insist on a refund or replacement.

Best wishes

Paul

Hi Paul / Ciderboy,

Concidering the retailer have offered a free repair and gaurantee they would replace/refund the unit should the defect occurring again am I within my rights to refuse this? I have asked the retailer for the date and details of the modification to the replacement part but they say they cannot obtain it.

Hello Gaz,

If they cannot provide you with sufficient proof that the repair will be of a satisfactory standard then you are well within your rights to reject their offer.

Why are they having a problem getting the part number information? Surely this information would be relatively easy to find if they really wanted to find it?

Because of the BIOS update that the motherboard in your laptop has received you really need to find out if the board that will be replacing it is not of the same type. If it is then the chances are that it will be as inherently defective as the board it is replacing. Even if it has been fixed but has the BIOS update that switches the fans on all the time then this is wholly unacceptable and will only deplete the battery life and increase the noise from your laptop.

If they cannot provide you with the part number then I would say that this is a little suspicious and I would reject their offer of a repair.

Any questions please let me know.

Good luck and best wishes

Paul
