Hi all

Bought my laptop from pcworld either late 07 or early 08.
while browsing the net 2 weeks ago screen decide to display everything a red colour then whole laptop froze. fearing a virus i immediately turned off wireless connection tried ctrl/alt/del to bring up task mgr with no luck so shutdown by holding power button. upon rebooting screen would intermitently appear and when it did i was met with windows startup failure. since then have tried to fix startup failure as windows cannot only to be met with no display at all except backlight, even when connecting external monitor.

Q1. Do i have an inherently defective laptop (p/n GQ238EA#ABU)?

Q2. If so will startup failure affect claim?

Q3. Does anybody know of a cheap way to backup hard drives? (have tried 2.5" to 3.5" ide connector but the hdd in laptop use different pins  )

Many thanks in advance

Darral

Hello Darral and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear that your laptop has failed.

Your laptop contains an Nvidia 8400 GPU which is one of the more prolific of the defective GPU's.

The problems you are experiencing are manifestations of the defect and coupled with the fact that you have an 8400 GPU I would say that it is highly likely that your laptop is indeed inherently defective.

Please find below answers to your questions.

From what you have described I would say yes. Having inspected in excess of seven hundred laptops now I have seen the same problems as you are experiencing many times.

Not at all. All that matters is proving your laptop is inherently defective. Once you have done this as long as there is no physical damage to the laptop then a successful resolution is a forgone conclusion.

The best price you can do that for is £3.49. This will buy you a SATA 2.5" Caddy and includes carriage. You can purchase one here:- http://tinyurl.com/4h9t4ol

There is a step by step guide on this forum that will help you reach a positive resolution and that is here:- post13.html#p13

If you follow my advice in that guide then you will be successful.

If you have any questions or if you need any advice then please let me know.

Please keep us updated on your progress.

Good luck and best wishes

Hi all,

Just a quick update: (Laptop purchased Jan 2008) Phoned pc world customer services 2/4/11 must have got wrong department as they didnt seem to know about defect, told them i want either a refund or replacement and was told to go back to the store it was purchased as it was only the manager of that store who could authorise that. went to store spoke to tech guy and manager, both very helpfull and seemed to know of the defect, they couldnt find my model on their list but gave me all the info i needed as i needed to call customer services on this matter. After getting 2 more wrong departments finally spoke to someone who has obviously dealt with this matter before as he prompltly and politely gave me clear instructions as to how to deal with this matter. So laptop will be sent to local pc clinic(who know about this problem) tomorrow 5/4/11 for a report.

will update as soon as report received.

Also store manager was very keen for me to let him know of the outcome of my claim and to use the store for any replacements i may need.

Hi all.
just got laptop back from engineers who have confirmed nvidia defect ;)

So after speeking with customer services sat 2nd april i have emailed them a copy of the report and the following:

I purchased this laptop in January 2008 for £749.99p and has been running fine, although a little hot, unitl approximately 4 weeks ago. The laptop switches on but no longer displays anything on screen or through the external monitor port. Following a bit of research i found that this was actually a common and well known fault with the nvidia gpu. i telephoned customer sevices on saturday 2nd april to make an out of warranty claim believing that my laptop suffered from this inherent defect. i spoke to a person named Richard who advised me to get an independant engineers report of the problem which i have done and attached to this email. as you can see from the report my laptop does in fact contain parts that were faulty at time of manufacture and that to best of the engineers knowledge there are currently no effective or permanent repairs for this fault, i therefore request that a refund or replacement laptop of equal specification be offered.

At time of purchase my address details were 114 Hesters Way Road, Cheltenham, Glos, GL51 0RR. i have since moved and my new address is 25 Carmarthen Road, Hatherley, Cheltenham, Glos, GL51 3ZJ.

i would be very thankful if you would deal with this matter promtly and if i do not hear from you within 7 days of reciept of this email i will assume that you have disregarded my claim and will have no option other than to pursue this matter through legal proceedings.

yours sincerely

Darral White

hopefully this will now get resolved :x

update: checked email after writing this and found reply from pc world with case reference. Strangely quick and looks like box standard reply
