Thanks Paul for all your help. I have just received a new laptop from John Lewis worth £800. I went in with my laptop, charger, original receipt and repair details and a ream of paperwork showing the faults. It took about a month (some of delay my fault) to sort out but without an engineers report or a model that was on the HP recall list, John Lewis decided to offer me a replacement laptop upto value of £800. I was very firm and very clear on what my rights were and what I wanted. I made it clear that they would have to make me a good offer in order for me not to take them to the small claims court and that i wouldn't except a budget brand and after several phone calls I got more than I'd expected. I now have a lovely Sony Vaio (with no NVidia chip) and no VISTA!!!!

So again many thanks for this great site, without it i would have probably accepted a repair or a much lower offer and would not have had the confidence to be quite so direct!
