Hi

My friend has given me a HP9233EU and the Comet receipt for £799 (wow) Purchase date 020207. He has really looked after it, it looks like NEW.

It has the Nvidia grapics fault. Powers on, blank screen and nothing. Lights on, nobody home.

I was just about to attack it and do the GPU heat gun fix (Have done this on the xbox before).
Then I found this forum...

I don't really know what to do, he wants me to have a go and fix it, but he would not be arsed in doing all this report, threatening Comet (I would)...

It is a simple, "look comet, here is the report, I want my money back", or is a bargaining thing with reports, sending the laptop in for a report to comet, and them reducing money for the use it has had already???

Any help really appreciated..

Hello Chiptivo and welcome to our forum.

Technically you yourself would not be able to pursue Comet without the permission of the original owner.

He would have to make the first contact with Comet to start the ball rolling but could then instruct Comet to conduct all further communications through yourself.

I did a quick check on the HP support website and found this relating to your model:- http://tinyurl.com/362ko3j

This is the BIOS update page for your model of laptop. The update, released on the 8th August 2008 was released for the following reason:-

Quote:
Updates the fan control algorithm of the notebook to reduce the likelihood of future system issues.

This proves that as early as 8th August 2008 HP were aware of the potential for your laptop to overheat - otherwise why release a BIOS update that switches the fans on 24/7 to the detriment of the battery?

Based on the above I would say your friend has a very good chance of success if the retailer were to be pursued.

If you can let me know the P/N from the white barcode label on the underside of the laptop I will see if I can find any further information.

I hope the above helps. If you have any questions please let me know.

Good luck and best wishes

Paul

Hello Chiptva,

Well, your model was one of those recognised by HP as being inherently defective.

That can further be confirmed here:- http://tinyurl.com/347yjsf

This means that there is no way that HP can deny the defect in your model of laptop.

The original document that the above link refers to has been removed from the HP website but the information contained therein is still valid.

I think that you will find the above information will help expedite a resolution to your problem.

If you have any questions or if you need any advice then please let me know.

Best wishes

Paul
