In July 2008 I purchased a HP DV6820ea from Comet. In June 2009 the laptop switched off all of a sudden and refused to boot up. None of the light on the laptop came on either and in short it was completely dead. I called up Comet and was nonchalantly told that it had nothing to do with them even though the product was still under warranty. I was then referred to HP who came to pick up the product free of charge for fixing. A few days later I called HP to find out how the laptop was. I was told that there was nothing wrong with it and to feel like I had made a fuss over nothing.

Fast forward:

Over the weekend the laptop crashed and switched off unexpectedly. When I switched it back on I get getting the BSOD before it switched off again. I let the laptop cool down because it was really hot before trying again. This time I was presented with a screen advising me to go into automatic repair mode or something like that which I did. This had no effect whatsoever as the repair failed. I then in frustration used the recovery manager and unwittingly wiped my hard drive clean! :'(

Thankfully I had my Iphone and was able to go online to look for solutions. The HP website advised that I do a hard reset; that is take out the battery, unplug the power connection and hold down the power button for a few seconds. I did this and surprisingly windows loaded up again normally however by now I was pissed because I had lost all the stuff on my drive.

Less than an hour or so later after I had done this reset the problem presented itself again; BSOD, switched off automatically and when I tried resetting it I got the screen in the pic attached and it has been that way ever since. I believe these issues have everything to do with the faulty Nvidia 8400m GS chip which is installed in my laptop. Between this time and the first time I when I had to send the laptop to HP I have had various issues with the machine including the BSOD. However I have always been able to switch it back on when the machine had cooled down. The laptop was just over 2 years old from the date of purchase. Before this one I had a Toshiba satellite which lasted for more than 6 years!!

I wonder if Paul can more or less tell from the pic below..of course if this goes further I will be looking to get a proper inspection of the machine from lapcure to support my case.

On taking advice from this forum I called up Comet yesterday and told them about my issue. I was put through to head office and told by some one that I would need to pay a £49 inspection fee. I refused and promptly told them that I would write them a formal letter before action instead.

Letter was written using the template on this forum and sent by recorded delivery yesterday.

The case continues.

Hello Cheriah and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear of the problems you are experiencing with your laptop.

Looking at the image you have supplied it certainly looks like you have a problem with your GPU and I have seen similar images to yours on numerous occasions and those laptops all had the defect.

You did right to reject their offer of a paid inspection - in my opinion it really would not have helped you.

Let's see if they respond to the letter before action though I wouldn't hold your breath.

Please let me know if you have any questions or if you need any advice.

Good luck and best wishes
