Hi guys, just came across your forum and I have to say I'm pretty happy that I did.

My laptop suddenly failed to boot which happened on Dec 24th 2010. I left my laptop upstairs and when I came back - the screensaver image was "frozen". I tried to reboot, but the laptop started going into some sort of cycle: after pressing the power button - it would work for 3 sec or so and then shut down abruptly. 3 or 4 sec later it would repeat the process and then go on and on continuously.

Also, several weeks before that happened, the laptop had difficulties connecting to WIFI, not to mention that it was quite hot and noisy as a helicopter - for as long as I can remember :)

After doing some research on the web, I managed to boot it only after removing all the batteries, including CMOS battery which basically identifies that there's an issue with some hardware. But once I tried to restart it - the same problem and it's not booting.

Also,it turns out nVidia had faulty GPU's, however, after checking the website "nvidia settlement" or something like that, I discovered that my laptop model is not on their list.

Since then, I emailed HP, describing the fault and everything else, including inherent faults and flaws in the laptop design just to get a reply: "As it is out of warranty...bla, bla", obviously, however read the letter - they did not take it seriously (I guess they never do).

I've just got of the phone after calling Comet Customer Services on 01482 320681, explaining what happened and was advised that I need to book the laptop for inspection which will cost £49.

So, I was going to ask whether it is the right way to go about it - send it off for this inspection or should I do anything else.

I would appreciate any assistance, thanks in advance.

Hello Guitalex and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear that your laptop has failed.

First of all please don't let the fact that your laptop is not on HP's list bother you, most of the laptops that are failing are not on their list and in my opinion their list is so wholly incomplete it makes it irrelevant.

Your laptop contains an Nvidia 7150 GPU and I have seen many, many failures of laptops containing this version of the GPU.

I would advise against letting Comet inspect your laptop. Their opinion could be biased and based on experience I would say that it is unlikely that Comet will deem your laptop to be inherently defective.

You would be much better obtaining your own report as that would be independent and would be unbiased.

After six months of ownership there becomes what is known as the reverse burden of proof. This means that it is up to you, the owner, to prove to the retailer that your laptop is inherently defective. It is not for the retailer to do this for you.

The cost of the engineers report is fully recoverable from the retailer and if your laptop is indeed inherently defective then the retailer would then have no option but to offer a resolution. If they refused then you should sue them in the small claims court.

There is a step by step guide on this forum that will help you reach a positive resolution and that is here:- post13.html#p13

If you follow my advice in that guide then you will be successful.

If you have any questions or if you need any advice then please let me know.

Good luck and best wishes
