Laptop Make: HP
Model: DV2750EA.
Store Purchased: PC World.
Purchased: 2008.
Failed: 2010.

Brilliant website. Here is my story so far !

The screen on the Laptop has divided into six separate sections, with a black vertical section midway through the screen. The six separate sections are highly pixellated and unreadable.
I took the Laptop back to the PC World store in Perth, only to be told by the "Tech Guy" (after consultation with his manager), that I would have to pay them to examine / repair it.
I explained about the Nvidia defect, but that made no difference to the response from the Tech Guy.
I have now sent the "Letter before Action" to PC World Customer Service in Sheffield on 10/02/2011 and await a reply from them.
Can you give an estimate of what would be an acceptable offer from PC World, based on the price paid and the usage since purchase.

Hello Perthscot and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear that your laptop has failed.

I did a quick check on the HP support website to see if I could find any information on your model of laptop and found this:- http://tinyurl.com/3x9dpwx

This is the BIOS update page for your model of laptop. On the 8th April 2008 HP released an update for your model of laptop. The purpose of this, according to the HP site, was:-

Quote:
Turns the system FAN on at the lowest speed, when the notebook is powered on

This means that as early as the 8th April 2008 HP must have been aware of the potential for your laptop to overheat - otherwise why release an update that switches the fans on continuously to the detriment of the battery?

I also note that this update was release one month BEFORE you purchased the laptop. One has to ask the question why HP allowed the continued sale of your model of laptop after they realised that it could overheat?

The problems you describe are indeed manifestations of the defect and I have seen it many many times.

If you can let me know how much you paid for the laptop I will calculate what the minimum refund should be.

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes

Paul

Hello Perthscot,

Based on the information that you have provided I calculate that the minimum refund that they should offer is £338.

If you can barter them uo from this amount then great, but I would not take a penny less.

I hope the above helps.

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes

I have had no response from PC World to the "Letter before Action".
Therefore I am now proceeding to "Step 3", which is getting an Engineers report.
I will keep you posted, as to my progress.

I have the exact same issue as OP.
Laptop Make: HP
Model: DV2750EA.
Store Purchased: PC World.
Purchased: June 2008.
Failed: March 2011.

The screen on the Laptop has divided into six separate sections, with a black vertical section midway through the screen. The six separate sections are highly pixellated and unreadable. Laptop re boots, sometimes restarts ok, others split screen.
I took the Laptop back to the PC World store in Lisburn, only to be told by the "Tech Guy", that I would have to pay them to examine / repair it.

I have searched the internet "high and low" for solutions and came accross this website.

What can I do?
Can you help me solve this "crisis"
Thanks in Advance

We certainly can and I can assure you that if everything is in order then you will reach a positive resolution.

The problems you describe are definitely manifestations of the defect so it doesn't take a genius to work out that your laptop is inherently defective.

How absolutely scandalous is that!

They MUST know about the Nvidia defect. PC World have been inundated with claims so I cannot believe that your case is the first that they have seen. Why on earth they tried to charge you to inspect a laptop that is inherently defective is beyond me.

But don't let this distract you, you WILL win your case.

I note that this update was released 2 months BEFORE you purchased the laptop. Why oh why did both HP and PC World allow the continued sale of a laptop that HP MUST have known had heat problems?

Your next step is to obtain an engineers report that will prove your laptop is inherently defective.

Once you have that you should send a copy to PC World along with a letter before action.

If they think that you are going to proceed to litigation then they will make you an offer.

The key to success is persistence. Stay strong, stand your ground but most important of all be persistent.

If your laptop is indeed inherently defective, which I believe it is, then you really cannot lose.

There is a step by step guide on this forum that will help you reach a positive resolution and that is here:- post13.html#p13

If you follow my advice in that guide then you will be successful.

If you have any questions or if you need any advice then please let me know.

Good luck and best wishes

Paul

Hi
thanks for the swift reply.

I see you recommend I go straight for the engineers report which is step 3.

First, should I try and contact pc world first using the template provided in the link?

Hello Skj10001

Doh! sorry about that, of course you should send them the letter before action first.

If you get no response to that then you should move onto step 3 in the guide.

A template of that letter can be found here:- download/letter_before_action.doc

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes

thank you.

I have emailed the dixon plc customer services. Awaiting a response.

I recently had a power cable/ battery issues with the same laptop and was advised to contact them. They responded requesting an engineers report, the independant repair shop I had used to diagnose the issue was relectant to supply one, so i left the issue and replaced the power cable. :b

However this is a much bigger issue re graphics card and I shall persue it and use a different repair shop to obtain an engineers report.
I shall update with a response.
