Hello Skj10001

Well, as you have ordered a replacement laptop you should tell PC World that a replacement laptop is now of no use as you have had to purchase a replacement because you couldn't afford to be without a laptop.

You should now only settle for a refund.

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes

I would like to update this thread:
Firstly, Id like to say thanks to Paul for all his advice.
After obtaining an Engineers Report [from Lapcure], I have been contacted by PC World offering me a partial refund! :D
The guy at PC World said he had never seen such a comphrensive report and that he could happily offer me £380 towards a new laptop and reimbussed cost of Engineers Report. I happily accepted as this was more than I expcted especially as when the laptop failed I was just going to dispose of it!
Initially I was offered the value in vouchers but I had already choosen a laptop from Dixons online and the vouchers could not be used online I was offered a bank transfer... very happy!
Again, Big Thank You to Paul for his expertise and advice.

Yes, I have to say the guy I spoke with at PC World Medics team was very amicable.

I hope this does not seem cheeky to ask but:

I have recieved my laptop back and as you predicted it has failed again... green screen etc....
Thats ok- I expected this and my new laptop arrives next week.

However it seems a shame to just throw the HP laptop into a drawer as graphics card aside Ive kept it in good condition.

Ive seen a similar Laptop on Ebay with bids, do you think if I remove my HD would mine fetch bids? And what do I say re graphics card etc?

Hello SkJ10001,

I would say that your laptop should fetch up to £100 for yours, maybe a touch more.

You will need to list it as having the Nvidia defect so that anyone purchasing it knows what they are letting themselves in for.

However much you get for it has got to be better than it just gathering dust.

Fingers crossed that you get a respectable amount for it. :x

Good luck and best wishes

Thanks for the quick reply, I was looking to sell my additional battery and power cord then saw people selling similar laptops to mine down to the same issue with the left mouse button.
In your experience should I put a reserve or just start it at...? £25.00.

I was thinking I could list the additional 8800mAh battery seperatly and then again the hp power cord I purchased from pc world just over a month ago seperatly.
Or would I be best listing all together.
Advise is much appreciated.

Hello SSkj10001,

I would advise that you sell the laptop as a whole as you are likely to receive more for it that way.

If you were to strip the entire laptop down and if you were to sell the laptop in pieces then you would receive more than you would if you were to sell it as a whole. Everything has a value, the hinges, the inverter, the front and back LCD fascias.

If you are handy with a screwdriver then I would advise that you fully disassemble the laptop and list each individual part on Ebay. Doing it this way means that you could net over £200 for the laptop.

The extra parts would also fetch bids further enhancing your overall refund.

I hope the above helps.

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes

Paul

:! :! :!

Paul,
Update, and success and another feather for your cap !

As there was no response to my second Letter "Step 4", Letter before Action and Engineers report, I called PC World Customer Services 0844-561-0000.
After some searching, they located my letters and gave me a Case Number and said the "Out of Warranty Claims Dept" would contact me within 48hrs.
The call from the "Out of Warranty Claims Dept" began by saying the Laptop had to go back to the Store for inspection,
I pointed out that I had started this process by taking the Laptop to their store.
I asked them to read the Independent Engineers report, which they then did, their response to the report was, "as it was now working, (after being repaired by Lapcure, using the reflow technique), I would have to wait until it failed again before they would agree to any refund".

I then pointed out the NVIDIA defect noted in the Engineers report, and that the reflow repair was a temporary fix, and would fail again, they persisted in stating that, while it continued to work, they could not issue any refund.
I pointed out that I had paid for the Engineers report and effectively for the reflow repair and that the report stated categorically that the repair would fail, and that they had sold me goods with an inherent defect, why should I have had to pay for a repair that we all knew was going to fail again, let's just deal with it now, rather than later.

Eventually it was agreed that if I returned the Laptop to them, they would reimburse me with a depreciated sum, (almost identical to Paul's previous estimate, plus the cost of the report), and they would retain the Laptop.
The repayment can be done using tokens or by BACS. I opted for BACS, as the Laptop has already been replaced.
The reflow repair has now failed (shortly after my telecon with PC World),the screen has returned to being divided into six separate sections with a black vertical section through the middle, and I will gladly hand the Laptop back to PC World.

Visited PC World store to hand over the Laptop and for them to make a confirmation telecon to "Out of Warranty Claims Dept"
Of course, they spoke to someone else at the "Out of Warranty Claims Dept" who insisted that a "Tech Guy" should look at it, the "Tech Guy" glanced at the screen and said it was a fault on the motherboard, but not the NVIDIA defect. I told him I had an independent engineers report stating it was the NVIDIA defect, however he was content in his own analysis, based on looking at the screen without any inspection so I left him to it and didn't even bother to show him the report.
I spoke directly to the "Out of Warranty Claims Dept" from the store, and we concluded the business with the agreed sum.
I was allowed to remove the Hard Drive and they kept the Laptop for recycling.

PC World have some staff who are very helpful even though they sometimes have a difficult job to do, however, there is a lack of joined up contact between departments and personnel, and unfortunately the so called technical staff I had contact with at PC World stores were seriously deficient in their knowledge of the NVIDIA defect.

I would like to thank Paul for his advice, and guidance, and re-stress his advice that persistence will overcome obfuscation by retailers, and if anyone reading this is considering giving up, please don't, because in the end, you will WIN !

Hello Perthscot,

Well done on your success. :! :! :! :!

I think you hit the nail on the head when you stated:-

It seems they like to make some of their customers jump through hoops, though they do appear to be consistently inconsistent in the information that they give their customers and also in the way that they treat their customers. At least based on the experiences of some of our forum members.

Thank you for your kind words in your post, much appreciated and I am glad that I could have helped you.

Well done again and all the very best for the future. :! :! :! :!

Best wishes

Paul
