Hi all

Not sure if anyone has posted this before so apologies if they have and i'm repeating something.

My partner has the above laptop which while she was using it yesterday just completely died on her. I/she has never had any problems with the laptop before apart from the fan which is constantly on despite being set correctly in the BIOS.

There is no life at all on the laptop, no lights, no fan, no screen.

I have done the following to try and resolve this.

Unplugged the power adapter and tried the laptop on the battery alone.
Unplugged the battery and tried the laptop on the power adapter alone.
unplugged the power adapter and battery and left the laptop for several minutes before trying them again.

None of the above had any affect.

I have now resorted to completely stripping down the laptop and removing the motherboard and have found out the following.

If I plug the power adapter into the DC IN socket while it is plugged into the motherboard, I hear a short circuiting noise from the actual DC IN socket and then get an electrical burning smell.

If I unplug the DC IN socket from the motherboard and then plug the power adapter into the DC IN socket, I don't get the short circuit noise and don't smell electrical burning.

Now, it could be the DC IN adapter that's at fault and I see from googling that you can buy these however, I am confused as to how it can be this because if it is, then why doesn't the laptop show any signs of life if the the power adapter is unplugged???

If it isn't this then it leaves the motherboard at fault and leaves me with a dilemma or do I scrap it and my partner buys a new laptop with brand new warranty OR do i get it fixed and risk something happenign again?

I am an IT Manager and have no issues with HP laptops at all as I don't buy anything else but HP at work and have not had many issues with them at all.

Help?

Hello Gazngazand welcome to our forum.

The problem you describe sounds like component failure on the mainboard rather than a problem with the DC-In board.

The problem is, like you quite rightly pointed out, do you get the laptop repaired with the possibility of something else going wrong in the future or do you just scrap it.

Only you can answer that. I could take a look at it for you and if it can be repaired then it would cost you £65 including the collect and return carriage. If it cannot be repaired then it would only cost £20 for the collect and return carriage.

What do you think?

Best wishes

Paul

Hi Paul

Thanks very much for your reply and I suspected that could be the case.

I have actually had a very good close look over the motherboard and don't see anything that could resemble anything blowing.

Do you work at lapcure and can i contact you there tomorrow?

Regards

Hi Paul

Thanks for taking my call on the phone the other day.

I have done another check and found that the area immediately around where the DC IN plugs onto the circuit board does get warm when i plug the power adapter into the DC IN socket. I am not sure if this is generic in that area but I did also notice that 3 components around it seemed to be very hot to the touch. I do have picture of these but am not sure if i can upload them on here.

As the problem appears to be with the motherboard, would you need me to send just the motherboard or should i reassemble the laptop and send it to you as a whole?

Regards

Hello Gazngaz,

The fact that some of the components are heating up and are becoming hot to the touch indicate a failed component, probably a capacitor, which has failed and is shorting causing the components to heat up.

If you were to send the laptop in I would prefer if you reassembled it and that way we can test the laptop fully once it has been repaired.

It will then also save you the hassle of having to reassemble your laptop once you get the board back.

I hope this is to your approval.

Any questions please let me know.

Best wishes

Paul
