I have a HP 6735s laptop that stopped working about a week ago. The power comes on but the screen stays blank and nothing loads up.

I typed this defect into a search and this forum has come up. I have read a number of threads and some say it is the Nvidia defect and others say it is not.

With that said I assume that either way as I have only owned the laptop for 18/19 months i still have a case for a claim.

Any advise would be appreciated.

Regards

Jamcol

Hello Jamcol and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear of the problems you are experiencing with your laptop.

The HP 6735S have an ATI GPU in them and not an Nvidia though they fail in pretty much the same way.

I have produced a large number of reports for this particular model of laptop and they had all failed due to the ATI GPU/BGA.

The good news is that you are as entitled to a refund or replacement laptop as the defect in your laptop is inherent.

There is a step by step guide in this forum that will help you reach a positive resolution and that is here:- post13.html#p13

Instead of mentioning the Nvidia defect when communicating with the retailer, you should say that you believe your laptop is inherently defective due to the ATI GPU or the underlying BGA (Ball Grid Array).

Don't let them fob you off, you have clear rights and the defect in your laptop is easily provable.

If you have any questions or if you need any advice then please let me know.

Good luck and best wishes

Paul

Paul,

Thanks for the quick response. I have contacted the retailer (ebuyer) and they have advised that as it is out of warranty I will need to provide a engineers report to back up what I am saying.

I have followed the links on the forum and I am organising this now. However, in their email they also advise that once they have received the report they will look into getting the laptop repaired. I know from reading other posts that this is not the best cause of action. When i send the report should I add in the lines regarding a written guarantee on company paper?

Regards

Jamcol

You send the report to them along with a letter before action. You shouldn't put anything about the repair into that letter.

When they reply to you if they offer a repair then at that point you should ask for the written guarantee and the part number of the mainboard that will be used.

Once you have that information if you pop back here and let me know I will advise further.

If you have any questions or if you need any advice then please let me know.

Good luck and best wishes

After an extended period of discussions with Ebuyer they have offered to pick up my laptop, test it them selves and if it is found to be faulty offer a partial refund.

I would appreciate some advise on whether this is a good option or not, and if not how I should be responding.

Thanks

Jamcol

Hello Jamcol,

Well, that is good news as at least it means you are moving forward.

As long as the agreement is that you let them test the laptop and if they find the laptop is faulty then they will offer a partial refund, then I would et them test your laptop.

You should place a note on the laptop in nice big letters that states "DO NOT REPAIR".

Ebuyer should also pay for the cost to collect the laptop from yourself.

I look forward to your next update and if you have any questions then please let me know.

Best wishes

Ebuyer never cease to amaze me! After all these months of haggling with many different customers having to provide an engineers report over a well documented inherent fault and then limiting refunds for it to first £35 and now £25, they have finally had the sense to see that if the customer says it has the BGA syndrome they might as well test it themselves knowing they will end up having to refund the customer AND not have to pay the refund on the report if that truly is the case!!! Let's hope they test "correctly"(!!)

Well I wait with baited breath as to what happens here - a major change of course for Ebuyer or just another tactic?

The best of luck Jamcol - keep us all posted.

I think I am nearly there. They have come back with an offer of either credit of cheque. However, they have said it has been calculated based on the time since purchased. Due to there delays the laptop had been sitting in a cupboard for 9 months now waiting for some action. I think the calculation should be based on beneficial usage rather then time owned. I do have email records of when I first reported the defect so I can back up my claim for when it broke.

Any thoughts would be appreciated and any legal back up I can refer to would also be useful.

Thanks

Jamcol

Hello Jamcol,

Refunds are calculated based on the amount of usage a customer has had, the purchase price and the unused usage.

Looking back through your thread I can see that you started your claim back in August 2010. Why was there a delay of a year between reporting the failure to Ebuyer and your current position?

Please let me know and I will advise further.

Best wishes

Paul,

Some of the delay is my fault as I had a few issues at the end of last year and the start of this year. With this said I have spent around nine months going backwards and forwards with ebuyer argueing over if the report is valid etc.

Regards

James
