Hi all Great forum you have here! finally a place which helps the consumer!

Basically i bought a Vaio Fz21S from the sony centre in coventry for £899.99 after my 19th bday in 2008 it lasted me just over a year until i first noticed the defect it was intermittent at first and at the time i knew nothing of the sort and believed it was my fault.

Then it became more frequent and then permanent so i just boxed it and left it, then i came across this forum the other day and read some of the great sucess stories and excellent help which is given on this board, i copied the "refund guide" to my ipod and read it a few times before i come up with the courage to take on sony, which they instantly rejected my claim/case and said my model is not affected and they would charge for a repair which i declined, yet it says on the sony post it is my model and it has the 8600m gs graphics, the guy said it was only the fz21s"r" models affected and not the fz21s so i asked to speak to his superior which im waiting on a reply from, when i put the phone down i re-read the step by step guide and realised i should take on sony centre (the retailer) instead as they might refund or replace my fz with a laptop of equal value, am i right in thinking this and if so how would i go about taking them on?

thanks in advance

Steph

Hello Steph and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear of the problems you have been experiencing with your laptop.

You need to be communicating with Sony head office rather than a Sony centre as they will not be able to help you.

Sony may try telling you that they want to insect your laptop and if THEY determine that it is not the defect then they will charge you anything between £150 - £165 to return the laptop.

You should refuse their offer of an inspection and should tell them that the reverse burden of proof means that it is up to you, the customer, to prove the inherent defectiveness of your laptop.

You should tell them that once you have a copy of the report you will send them a copy along with a final opportunity to settle with you.

Once they have the report if they refuse to comply then you should just sue them. If your laptop is indeed inherently defective then you really cannot lose.

Please let me know when you are ready to proceed with a report as that is a service we provide.

Take no notice of them when they say that they do not recognise the problem in your model of laptop. Why would they admit to a problem when it could cost them dearly?

HP do the same. They admit to a problem in a small handful of models and then claim that all other failures are "coincidental"

But don't let that dissuade you - if your laptop is indeed inherently defective then you really cannot lose.

If you have any questions or need any advice then please let me know.

Good luck and best wishes

Paul

Hi paul thanks for the prompt reply, sorry to ask but should I contact the Sony centre head office as that was the retailer I purchased it from?

I phoned the manufacturer before but in one of the guides it said I should take on the retailer rather than the manufacturer.

Many thanks

Steph

Hello Steph,

Yes, Sony Centre head office is the place to contact.

Remember, no matter what they say you should refuse their offer to send your laptop in for an inspection.

Good luck and best wishes

Hi Paul, sorry i misunderstood,
i phoned the sony centre (coventry) to ask them for their head office number and address, they asked why and when i told them they instantly rejected what i had to say and tried to fob me off to manufacturer, when i said all they could offer me was a repair and that it was not satisfactory as they couldnt guarantee me 100% that it wouldnt happen again he told me there was no sign of the official sony post (this one... http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/news-i ... ews_id=349 )
and that it was probably american in which case wouldnt apply to me or anyone in the uk.

when i tried to bypass him and just get the address and contact details of head office he belittled me by basically saying i was "lying" and saying i was making up the sony post and i was just winging! in so many words, which angered me BIGTIME, i kept my cool and insisted he gave me the details i required to which he then said "it was against his company rules to give his head office details out" which must be a lie surely.

so now im in limbo.... what would you recommend?

Many Thanks

Steph

Hello Steph,

What absolutely disgusting treatment by their staff!

Do Sony only employ morons to work in their stores or is this store unique?

I will find the office address for you Steph and will post it here when I do.

I would also lodge a formal complaint about the way you have been treated. They should have told you the address and it just shows the level that Sony seem to be going to in order to exacerbate their customers from making a claim.

One has to ask are the staff giving this advice of their own volition or have they been told to be purposefully evasive and unhelpful?

Maybe it is the latter!

I will post the address as soon as I have it.

Best wishes

Paul

Hello Steph,

Ok, I think this is the correct address:-

Sony United Kingdom Ltd.
Pipers Way Thatcham
Berkshire
RG19 4LZ

Their number is 01635 869500

I would give them a call on Monday, they should be more intelligent than the morons who dealt with you before.

Good luck and if you have any questions please let me know.

Best wishes

Paul

Hi Paul, after a week of persistence and battling with sony con....i mean centre :D i finally got the details for their head office, the coventry franchise is owned by William Robb LTD whereas others are owned by sonnex and others...etc

i got the address, contact name and number, but the guy is only in two days a week so ive got to catch him, ill phone him first if he refuses point blank then ill send the letters.

Is this the proceedure i should follow?

Many Thanks

Steph

Hello Steph,

How obstructive of Sony, why couldn't they just give you the details without all the cloak and dagger business?

I wouldn't bother phoning to talk to him, I would go straight to the initial letter before action. I find that this method gets you the quickest solution. They will probably only try to fob you off anyway.

There is a template available on this website and that is here:- letterbeforeaction.pdf

You should download that, edit it with your details and send it to the address they gave you.

Please ensure that you send this via recorded delivery and keep a copy of the letter and postal receipt.

If after seven days they have failed to respond then you will need to obtain an engineers report. Please let me know when you get to this stage as this is a service that we provide.

Start off with the above and see how you get on.

If you have any questions or if you need any advice then please let me know.

Good luck and best wishes
