Good afternoon all,

Im a first time poster but i have read through a lot of the articles on here for advice. I have a HP G60-100em which has failed on me with the completely black screen (gets to windows loading screen and nothing else.)

I have a friend who repairs laptops and he told me that it was a common fault on this model and he has attempted to fix one before only for it to break 3 months later. He pointed me in the direction of this forum to see if you could help.

Now here is my issue - when i bought it i was at Uni and typically had issues with my debit card, so i used my cousins boyfriends card to pay for the laptop from Dixons and gave him the cash (the reason i didnt go into store to get it was because it was cheaper on dixons.co.uk if i remember correctly). The laptop was shipped to his address and i picked it up from his house and kept a copy of the receipt which was emailed to him directly by Dixons. Obviously it has his details on the receipt but it is my laptop. I have it saved on my emails (luckily) as my cousin split from her boyfriend (although i can still get in touch with him if needed.)

Would i be able to claim from Dixons for the repair or replacement of the laptop?? It was only purchased in Feb 09 and failed in November of last year. The laptop is in immaculate condition except for the graphics card issue obviously.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated :nh

Thanks,

Jamie

Hello Jamie and welcome to our forum.

Sorry to hear of the problem you are experiencing with your laptop.

The problem is that the transaction was conducted between Dixons and your cousins boyfriend, meaning that as far as they are concerned he is the owner of the laptop and the only one that can pursue a claim.

You will need to contact him and ask if he will start the ball rolling with Dixons. Once he has made the first contact he can then request that all further communications be passed through yourself.

You will then be able to pursue the case yourself, though when it comes time for a refund they will generally refund back to the payment source, which in your case was your cousin's boyfriends debit card.

Whilst this all sounds a little tricky is is achievable, as long as you are still on speaking terms with your cousin's now ex-boyfriend.

I hope the above helps.

Any questions please let me know.

Bets wishes

Paul

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the response. I will email him to see if he minds, im sure he wont. What would he need to do/say?? Does he just need to ring Dixons to say that the laptop is broken with an inherent defect, and that he wants me to discuss the issues with them? Should he tell them that i am the owner of the laptop etc but he paid for it??

I know its a little strange (typical that it would happen on a laptop purchased like this!) but thanks for all of your help so far

Thanks,

Jamie

Hello Jamie,

There is a letter in the downloads section of this forum that will help and that is here:- Proxy_letter.pdf

If you download that, edit it with the relevant details and send it to the retailer then they should deal directly with you.

Technically whilst you may own the laptop because of the fact that he paid for it then they will deal with matters as if he was the owner.

Any refund that they may award would be paid back to him and would probably be refunded to his debit card as that was the method of payment.

You should get your friend to complete the form then contact Dixons and tell them that your laptop has failed due to an inherent defect in the GPU.

There is also a step by step guide on this forum that will help you reach a positive resolution and that is here:- post13.html#p13

If you need any help or advice along the way then please let me know.

Good luck and best wishes

Paul

Hi Paul,

Just thought i would give you an update.

I rang Dixons Customer Service to advise of the issue, and the Customer Service Advisor (Shaz i think was her name) was really helpful and explained the next steps. She gave me the Claim ref number and advised me to get an Engineers report on the laptop and to send it in to the Out Of Warranty Team for them to assess and come back to me.

So, i will be arranging for my laptop to have an engineers report from you through Lapcure seeing as you have been very helpful so far.

Heres to hoping that Dixons are as helpful when i send them the Engineers report :x

Cheers,

Jamie

Scrap that last message....i just had a phone call from my Claim Manager Raj Gantu, who was very helpful and told me to ignore what Shaz told me.

He said that i should take it into a PC World Store for them to look at and get them to ring him in store to advise of the fault. Then he said he would be happy to make a contribution towards a replacement laptop if the defect is present.

Any idea what amount i should be looking for? I know it wont be much as the laptop was cheap when i bought it, but its the principle as i still expect it to work after 18 months no matter how much i pay.....

Thanks,

Jamie

I don't want to sound downbeat but what you've been told to do is the same as I was told ------ led to believe that it was simply a quick look to confirm defect and a phonecall whilst you are in store to complete negotiations.
BUT ----- PC World then insisted on attempting to reset the machine back to initial settings and, when I refused (because I saw no point), they have drawn things out. However, I am persevering and, thanks to the advice on this forum, I am sure that (eventually) PC World will pay up.
Good luck ! I hope they don't give you the runaround.

RESULT! I was in PC World for 2 minutes who confirmed the GPU was shot so they rang Raj Ganta at Head Office to let him know. He then made an offer of £160 straight off the bat in terms of compensation so i accepted :!

I was surprised at the ease of it all after some of the horror stories i have heard. Good luck to everyone and Paul, thanks for all of your help and advice. Cheers to the community on this site as well for helping where possible.

This compensation has gone towards my new nVidia GPU-Free laptop and i will be selling the g60 for spares on eBay :)

Stay strong and :x

Jamie

Hello Jamie,

Well done on your success :! :! :! :!

I am really pleased that you have reached this positive resolution without the need to resort to litigation.

The G60 really is an abysmal laptop and the build quality is, in my opinion, absolutely horrendous.

Good luck with your new laptop and I hope that it gives you years of faithful service.

Best wishes

Paul
